Air Pump Failure
Hi all!
well you know i have been complaining from a noise in my engine which is clacking or tapping which is RPM dependent. We do not know where it is coming from. The mechanic here told me he is 80% confident it is the water pump.... so i went investigating.
- I do not have any water leak in the car
- Engine temperature is constant at first bar and 1.5 bar but never more even in heavy traffic and with load
- TB/WP were done 3 years ago and about 2-3k miles ago... which is why i am kinda dumbfounded...
I have been trying to trace the sound which is making my car sound like a tractor a little bit, and it is definitely not a comforting sound.
Anyways the only thing i thought of checking was the timing belt through the hole in the cam cover... when i looked through the belt looked fine with no wear on it whatsoever, HOWEVER the belt was moving back and forth by about a few millimeters? but still within the roller width.
Now i am a little worries. Actually a lot. I will try to tape the sound on my cell phone and maybe if possible tape the movement of the belt.... Any help is appreciated.
In the meanwhile and just in case i will go ahead an order a brand new TB/WP kit with rollers and all from 928 Specialists. All Porsche of course... no room for error.
Again, any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I would check the belt tension. when you say the belt is going back and forth, does it look like the cam gear itself is moving side to side ?
I would also take the distributor cap off and see if the distributor rotor is loose.

From many threads on this forum related to 928 water pumps the amount of time and/or miles has little to do with when the pump fails. There's also much discussion as to which manufacturer is the best pump.
It is possible that you have a water pump failure with the impeller hitting the block. If the impeller is plastic the block should be in good shape; if its metal there may be other issues. In either case I wouldn't run the engine anymore until its properly diagnosed.
There was a thread not long ago re. a loud engine noise which turned out to be a camshaft spider issue; again I'd not run the engine as the risk of severe damage is considerable.

Hi Khaled,
Sounds alot like the waterpump is failing and quite loose.....
I have had that sound twice, and both times it was the waterpump.
Basically you dont want to drive before its been checked and fixed.
Like you said, its not a pleasent or comforting sound.
And that an indication of: Danger...!

Roger also has the new Laso pumps , they are nice quality, not a rebuilt part, worth looking into

I am going to tape the sound and video and post... this is starting to sound like more headache for me... aghhhhhhhh by the way, i have had this sound for a long time, nothing new and that is the weird thing. The issue here in Lebanon with the tighter confined spaces, it is more apparent and very clear. Expect an update shortly guys.

not sure what the roller bolt would have to do with it... and how a bolt would go bad. I will have to take it in for inspection ASAP, but want to make sure what is wrong first so i do not throw money left and right for no reason. The sound is of something loose and rotating. There is no grinding on metal noises just a clack clack clack noise.
Ok i just taped the car in the garage and even removed the air duct and snooped inside the area showing the cam gear and belt moving front/back on it... if anyone has any feedback on the noise and belt movement, here is the audio and video

Stop running the car that is not good.
It may be the pulley for the water pump.You need to have it inspected without running the car any more.

I had a water pump fail after a few thousand miles with exactly the same symptoms - noise that's rpm dependent while temps still looked fine. Replaced water pump, no more noise. Definitely don't run it any more and find out exactly what's going on.

The car has been running like this with the exact same sound for the past year or more as far as i recall, even back in AZ before i shipped it.... not sure... this sucks big time. I hate the tractor sound 
... Anyways first thing on monday is a stop at the dealer or the mechanic to see what we should do. I want them to disassemble the whole front and really put their finger on the issue so i can order the parts ASAP. This is such a joke; the car stayed at the dealership for a whole month, and they did not have time to see where the sound is coming from!!!! monkeys!!!!!! can i sue them?
