Take the money and move on... hell, with that damage, I would even take $10k and the salvage title. Document the damage with before and after pics (same for the before/after title) and I don't think you will have any issues selling the car later. The damage is MINIMAL. A good bodyshop will not have any issues matching the paint, they do it on a daily.

I heartily agree with Canuck928 - $18K for an 85 is way more than you could ever sell it for. Take the money and buy another very well sorted car, and still have plenty left to take your lady out for a great vacation.

Also, it should not be overlooked just how bullet proof these cars are - a wreck like that with only that amount of obvious damage is amazing - these cars keep you safe in most collisions!

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm going to try for a lower $ + car settlement. If they don't go for that I'll take the settlement and try to get the car back at the auction

The insurance rep was pretty adamant on the salvage title, in fact he informed me the "as of now we have reported this to transport Canada as a loss and it now has a salvage title whether you go through insurance on this or not." That ticked me off and I really had to refrain from saying something I'd regret. My response was that I would look at the car in more detail and decide if I would accept their analysis or not. The heart burn on the salvage title for me is not so much the blemish on the car title for future re-sale but the cost and ability to ever put the car back on the road. I'd hate to have to part this one out because an insurance agent decided to slap a salvage title on it.

Based on the damage I am confident I could take the hood, front body panel (sorry Nicole - Full front clip is probably not the correct term, just the front body panel from the body seal forward + the metal bumper + shocks beneath is what I think the damage is limited to) and drive a more road worth car than many on the streets today.

Totally agree...take the money and track the salvage...tell everybody you know up there to look for the car as it enters the world of salvage. You should be able to get it back for 3k and fix it for 2k

I will never understand insurance companies. Give you $18000 and sell it at auction for $3000, thus they are out $15000.

I think that car can be fixed for less then 1/3 of that. Makes no sense.

Why can't you take the money and buy the car from the salvage yard, either way you will have a salvage title but more money in your pocket.

Estimate on the repair was 15 K hence the write off - this assumed no mechanical damage - any mechanical damage and this estimate gets thrown out the window, so Ted your math is correct 3 K expected auction price.

My hesitation on the salvage yard is that it won't come out of there in as good of shape it went in ( Scavengers, someone might try to start the car and rev the heck out of it ect) . I might just be paranoid.

I tabled a lower $$ offer + the car in my possession straight from the body shop to the insurance company this morning. If they can't do that I have a right of first refusal to match the highest auction bidder after the auction closes, so I can evaluate the price and see if I keep the $$ or buy it back.

OMG Rich............just saw this thread, glad you and the wife are ok; sorry about the car, it was a beauty.

While a car is a car we put out heart and soul into these 928s and your car was one nice example. To get another in same or better condition is slim.............I'd do as you are and dont worry about the title, just keep the car in the family

Good luck.

Thanks for the concern Malcolm

The car did everything we asked of it, it stopped fast and protected us, and the fellow in the other car.

The family already has designs on it. My three year old told me the other night "get the Porsche back dad, we can fix it, it was blue, we have to get it back"

Smart kid......

Sorry for what happened but the damage doesn't look that bad. The Holbert car is 20 time worse than yours.

If the car goes through a salvage auction, they will have to phisically have it at the auction. Many times it takes a month or months for a car to actually go throught the salvage action. All this time it will sit outside, on the lot with the rest of the wrecks. If you want to keep it, make the deal before they take the car.

If a wreckcer/junkyard deciedes to buy it, I don't think they will sell it to you at cost. Make the deal with the insurance company as soon as you can.

I had mine written off (1986)and 4 years later I bought a 'out of the box' 90 S4
from the original owner, service records from day 1.

Sucks about your car.

Seriously, can the insurance company report the car as salvage before you've come to an agreement with them over insurance settlement?

Surely whether its an economic salvage depends on agreement over policy payout? Until then you have the option of not using the insurance and just paying out of pocket, no? If that's the case, then they've just done huge additional damage to the value of your car by reporting it as a salvage vehicle when it may not be. Or, the insurance rep is lying to you to try and move his case along a bit faster.

I could understand them reporting it if it was completely beyond repair, as a statutory write-off that would not be safe to put back on the road, however that isn't this case.

Rich: Give that kid a raise in his allowance. I like blue ones too. That does not look real bad.Might not buff out but looks like a few front end pieces, new blue paint job and you are back in business. Good luck.

Hi,

If they are going to total the car. They should pay you for what you have into it. Receipts. Strip everything out of it. Settle for 20k and get yourself another 928. Good luck.
