Default Head Job Options

Lambert jokes to a minimum please, this is serious stuff!
Engine is out, DSide head off, 2 bent valves so far
15X,000 miles

Options

1. Repair existing heads
a. + Don’t have to mess with lifters (32 of them!)
b. + Don’t need to mess with cam upper journal bearings
c. + Can sell reworked heads purchased from Mason
d. - Need to buy 2 valves
e. - Get two valves seated in head.
i. Maybe do all valves on both heads WYAIT
f. ? Assume heads and pistons aren’t damaged.

2. Use Mason heads (with valves and springs)
a. - Transfer lifters
b. - Transfer cam upper journal bearings
c. + Sell old heads and valves and springs

3. ????

What’s the deal with lifters and journal bearings anyway?
What range of tolerance is acceptable?
+/- .00X???

What do you mean by transferring cam journal upper bearing ?
If your talking about the caps that hold the cams in, they are not transferable and are unique to each head, does the heads you bought from Mason have the cam caps ?
You can use the old lifters if your using the same cams, do not mix the lifters.

I'd replace those two valves, the associate guides, all the valve stem seals and put it back together.

There must have been some serious damage done if you have to repair the head itself if not the associating parts with it. If that's the case, I would find some good used ones. Nothing beats a new valve job though and will dramatically extend engine life past the 200,000 mark.

I'm willing to bet the valve guides on both sets of heads are out of spec or very close to it. So figure in a valve guide / seal job, might as well use your heads and buy two valves.

Default bent valve picture

Heres a pic with the bent valve in cyl5...why didn't both valves bend? seems to me that they're in the same place at the same time?

use your heads have then both checked for cracks then a skim cut then new guides and teflon valave seals and replace any bent valves you will be good to go . make sure to rinse out the oil pathways before installing the heads on the block this also means removing the oil anti back flow valves, and chack the seats of these valves make sure that they are tight in the heads.
