Default 928 to the track?

I was wondering, what does it take to get a 928 on the track? The car will be driven on the street, "street legal".

Do I need a roll cage to take her around the track for racing?

Do I need to go to a driving school for some kind of certificate?

I will be moving to Atlanta soon and I undersand there is a nice track there.

I am not looking to win any races or anything like that. I would like to take her down the straights wot and hit a curve and enjoy the car which I am unable to do on the street.

Is it possible to just pay for driving around the course?

Most areas have a number of events, both Porsche and other makes, from autoX to full size tracks. A good place to start is called DE, driver education events. Ask in some of the racing type forums areas, and find out whats local for you, and suits your budget.

Helmet, gloves, long sleeve shirt, long pants and shoes. Your car must pass tech and you can find the checklist on your PCA Region web site or the hosting region web site.

Give me a shout when you get moved to Atlanta. The Peachstate Region is very active in holding track events at Road Atlanta. You'll be close to a few great tracks once you're moved.

Looking at picking up a rebuilt shortblock from a member. Always like to have one in reserve!

Lucky you.. If Road Atlanta is close and you get in with Peachstate Porsche Club, then you can be taught how to drive properly and on a great track and then after a few sessions you can drive your car at 140mph ...for a while..legal safe and with a bone stock 928 ..about $150.00 per day...2 and 3 day events and the best Instructors at any track are PCA Instructors....$42.00 a year PCA membership it's all win..win.....

There are lots of driving clubs that rent tracks and sponsor drivers education events where groups of cars do laps. Most require that you be with an instructor for your first few events until they are sure that you are SAFE and have reasonable car control before they turn you loose...Stock cars are OK with no roll bar but highly recommended.

Kev,

Is right... PCA has some of the very best instructors you will ever have sit in the car with you (and maybe drive you around in your car for a few laps the first time out and then if you are REALLY lucky, scare the CRAP out of you in THEIR CAR!) The DE events sometimes go the the name HPDE (High Performance Drivers Education) as well.

You do have to be 18 to join in the fun with PCA and most other groups. Here in Texas you would have an instructor with you for every run session (4/day 20ish min each) for your first few weekends helping you to find your way around and become a VERY SAFE heads up driver. At Road Atlanta I would hope they spend at least two weekends with you as well (ie. 16 run sessions) as that track can bend a lot of sheet metal if you don't do it right. It is very fast and does not have really big run off areas.

You will have an absolute ball in your car. Be sure your tires are VERY, VERY GOOD, brakes pads are beaded in but pretty new, rotors are in good condition with plenty of metal left and that your engine is solid. Oh, you will need to bleed your brakes and replace all the fluid too... Most of that should be covered on the Technical Inspection form.

In TX you would need a helmet, long sleeve cotton shirt, jeans and shoes... no gloves required for our events in TX...

Thanks for all of the info. I am not sure about my driving skills though I believe they are good. I am sure I have a lot to learn and look forward to being taught.

I have very good hand eye. I have only been passionate about to things in my life, being a world class tennis player and driving a car like a 928 on a real track.

Played on the tour for 9 yrs so now it's time to follow my other passion.

Like I stated I am not in it to be competetive and kick *** I just want to feel the thrill! I just hope I can keep my competitive nature at bay as I don't have the resourses to go really fast and break parts! What I mean is building a all out race car.
