Need Help with instrument cluster!!
Hi all, I finally joined the 928 family after wanting one since they were released in the 70's. I have owned 924's & 944's in the past but they are really no comparison for the 928.
I have a 1989 Porsche 928s4 Guards Red w/61000 original kms.
Now to my problem......
The instrument cluster doesn't work as in none of the guages with the exception of the voltage guage. None of the digital display lights or work either. Also the power windows nor power mirrors work. I just recieved the car 2 days ago via train/truck. The people at the train company did say they had to boost it to get it started to transfer it to the truck. Could they have caused some damage? It also looks like someone was in the fuse box?? After talking to the gentleman that sold it to me, he assured me all of this was working when he delivered the car to the train. And I know for a fact that the guages were working when he put it on the train as he took pictures to day he put it on the train.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Check fuse #10. If it's good, remove and re-insert 3 times. In fact, I would remove all fuses and relays one by one and clean their contacts with a pencil eraser. An '89 model year with only 64k km has been sitting for most of its life.

On my '90 it was fuse 25 that caused these symptoms, but a look at the '89 fuse chart suggests possibly fuse 24?)

Then check all the fuses with a multimeter, and doublecheck that each fuse is properly sized for its location, there should be a fuse chart on the underside of the wooden CE cover.
If not, here's the '89 fuse chart:

EDIT: Too slow typing. Dan's right. the instrument panel fuse should be #10 for '89. But check 'em all anyway.

When I got my car shipped, it had the same problem. Makes me wonder what part of the shipping process causes this? Probably a badly executed jump start/charge. For me it was fuse #39 (why does Porsche love to change stuff like fuse position for no reason?). This corresponds to fuse #10 on an '89. A busted Current-Pulse/Interior light fuse may also cause weird issues.

Good to see another Canadian 928. Make sure to disconect the battery before removing fuses! I had something similar after cleaning the hot post with the battery connected. My dash reset when cleaned and reconnected

dt,
This maybe stoopid, but did you check the that the wires were seated correctly on the cluster? Seems possible that the car could have gotten shaken and stirred along the journey, perhaps they became unseated?
That would be nice, because it is free and super-simple.
Oh, and take Dan's advice aobut replacing all the fuses. It is the right thing to do.
