Default Did I get a good deal?

I purchased a 928 S from a guy down in South Dakota, about 200 miles away from me. He was selling it for $3800 for a fast sell. The 928 had a fuel leak, needed a clutch bleed, and mechanically that is all that was wrong with it.

Before I went down to take a look at it, I had him fix the fuel leak, as that might have been a problem taking it for a test drive. Cosmetically, the rear needs new paint, but mechanically the car is SUPER solid. He had it sitting outside last winter. There was a chip in the paint and moisture got underneath, which is why the paint is peeling now.

When I got there I took a deep look at her, and she started up just perfect with a roar that gave me goosebumps. Reverse and First gear were grinding like crazy and the clutch seriously did need bled. It drove just fine with all otehr gears though and I was too happy and excited with the car to deny it!

I brought it back I bought it from him for $3500. It drove back home the 200 miles just perfect. Needed to put a lil air in the tires, but other than that it was a damn fun ride home. All the electrics worked great, but the A/C needs fixed- not really an issue now though since it's winter.

The Interior is in completely good condition. It's beginning to fade, but that's nothing a couple of cans of Colorbond won't fix.

So did I get a good deal? Here are some images below, minus the last one, from my 924.Picture quality isn't the greatest. I took these with my video camera. I just finished the rear hatch yesterday, and dyed the carpet and everything. It all looks brand new. I also bled the clutch and it works great, and all the gears shift perfect now.

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the asylum!

Too bad about the paint. I am wondering why the clutch needed to be bled. Where was the fuel leak? You will want to replace ALL the rubber fuel lines in the engine compartment. I'm just guessing that you did not have a PPI done?

It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about the amount you paid for YOUR car, it only matters that it makes you happy. As the great Jim Bailey has posted in this forum numerous times:"You are only $10,000 away from a $5000 car"

Good Luck!

Congrats. You being able to drive it 200 miles is a big plus. I wouldn't worry to much what others think as long as your happy with it.

Hell, if the thing drove 200 miles home and seemed pretty good then I think you probably did ok. The paint is not going to be cheap, but you can spot fix that and probably do pretty good and you already mentioned the interior treatment. I think you could have done a lot worse for sure!

Bottom of the quarter window above the gas filler is a known rust spot, and that one has run wild for some time.

Good deal is anybodies guess until you know a LOT more about this car and what you want. My guess is that you got an OK deal, nether especially good or bad, and that in a couple years of fixing the purchase price won't mean that much either way.

The clutch may need bleeding, but most likely the syncros are bad.

shifting grinds:'clutch needs bleeding' = doesn't run:'just needs fuel pump'

I agree w/ PorKen on this one... Your grinding 1st and R have NOTHING to do w/ a clutch bleed... They will require replacement. Might be cheaper to find a good used tranny too in the long run...

Nice car! Sweet a 5 speed. I'd say you did ok. Just get the cosmetics fixed up and enjoy. Don't forget to check that t-belt though.

At this point the worst case you are out $3,500 which is really very little in the 928 world.....drive it enjoy it it is after all an EMOTIONAL purchase has NOTHING to do with logical rational and is far far from an investment......it is the smile per mile that matters.

Nice, what year, 83?

If you always go slow into first, then to reverse, you can minimize the grind. That's what I do on a car very similar to yours, which I paid more for and got less than you did. Plus, slow shifts, not speed shifts. Enjoy the torque. Drive the heck out of it. Log some miles.

My trans grinds if you shift it too fast. You just get used to it.
