Here's the word from IB:

Early on Thursday last week (PST) our websites encountered an attack, one which is often referred to as a “DDOS” (distributed denial-of-service) attack.

While our network is setup to handle very substantial traffic (it deals with over 50 million visitors each month), as has been seen by other large internet sites (Twitter, Facebook, Google et. al.) such a large scale attack will cause connection difficulties. In this we were no different, and it wasn’t until sometime on the weekend where we were able to implement a successful resolution to the issue.

As part of the implementation of the resolution you may have encountered some issues with the site and its functionality, we are working through each of those items, and if you come across an issue, if you could please post it in the help forum to ensure that we have seen it, it would be appreciated.

We have been (and continue to) work around the clock until all the issues are resolved, our apologizes for the inconvenience.
Thanks,
Adrian – Internet Brands.

Note dealing with the DoS attack meant that the planned server upgrade Friday never happened. It will be done today.

Best,

Really? When was the last time Twitter, Facebook, or Google were down for three days?

That snarky post clearly establishes you as an expert on cyber traffic and DOS attacks!

I assume you are referring to my post. I am not an expert. The implicit QoS comparison with Google etc. just sounded preposterous to me.

As far as I know none of the above were down for three days. On the other hand consider the resources they have. I mentioned then because a well organized Denial of Service attack can take down even the biggest sites.

It's a little like my having a problem with my car at a race with only my son to help versus The Flying Lizards team - they have a significant payroll at every race and spare parts worth more than my entire car. I might get my car fixed, but it will take longer.

Must admit was disappointed when the announced 90min downtime became afew days but all seems well now.

Hopefully the new upgrades maintain the site as good as, or better than ever before.

Good luck

Is the upgrade critical? Seems like after the issue just encountered you might consider delaying new changes for a period of time to calm the fervor

Bingo! I'm not a fan of snarky, accusatory, semi-innuendo like that, especially these days, when more facts than you've ever seen are five seconds away from the tips of your fingers. Attitude is not truth.

There have been many HUGE sites (ones that have been around much longer than the internet infants you cited - ever heard of an auction site called eBay or that start-up Yahoo?) that have been taken down for extended periods of time by DDOS attacks. Clicky here for some reading material.

The cited article on Internet Brands is, while quite illuminating (sounds like they run their business like the Chinese run their society), is irrelevant to the subject at hand, which was the DDOS attack that they could not stop.
