It would be a tall order to have that car ready in 2011, though.

Thanks Ed. I felt bad posting that, knowing you have a mountain of work ahead of you and the 2012 timeline is tight enough already. Let's just move it to 2014 and celebrate the 28th anniversary.

Dwayne, i don't know if we can all say thanks enough for lettting us experience this vicariously through you, it can be difficult enough to trailer a car across country, much less stopping and documenting noteworthy stops along the way, so that others can enjoy them as well -
you are definitely "the man" -
thanks !

Great story and pictures Dwayne. Sorry we weren't around when you passed through southeast PA (about 25 miles from Holbert's dealership), you could have rested up overnight. We were at a Drivers Ed event at Virginia Int'l Raceway - getting in as many quick laps as possible before hurricane Ida hit the southeast US!!

THANKS to you and Ed for all you are doing to make this historic car a memory for all future 928 owners, and for keeping us aprised of your adventures crossing this wide country.

Im so happy you were able to make this trip and deliver the car, AND stop at the Holberts as well! They probably were a bit surprised!
Im so upset that the car finally made it near VIR, but I was not along with it, nor was in the shape to run the track! Someday! I hope!

Maybe that's the biggest mistery of them all.

Cool story.

This is the greatest 928 road trip ever and it's being done right - even my wife found this thread interesting and 928's aren't her thing. Very very cool. GREAT WORK!

without getting into the details, basically the autoshop teacher who was the caretaker of the Holbert car, was not able to buy the car from the school. However, a sizable donation would allow him to take possession of it.

Then, it sat and didnt run for years, with a rats nest in the airbox, and lots of cobwebs. somehow, they got it running and I drove it after checking it out for a few hours in Reno. I drove around the block for a couple of hours, until I was convinced I knew the car well enough to travel accross the Donner Pass. I should have brought friends, just in case I broke down and got hungry. afterall, it was the middle of winter. I had to use a glove for a windshield wiper, while going over the wet roads of the mountain pass into california. (also used baby socks on the air box for makeshift air filters) I told myself I would be nice to it along the way, but i did a 60-100mph run at 7000feet and did one again in sacremento. both were VERY encouraging, as they were faster than my 5 liter part euro.

anyway, the rest is history.
