Default Updated #2: Just Bought this S4... Blown Motor w/pics

Update #2: So it’s pretty clear why it was running so rough, only 7 pistons were actually connected to the crank, I can't believe I had it running at all, and with no motor noise - go figure. Looks like the reason for 0 compression on the #2 cylinder is due to a completely blown engine. All bearings are worn down to the copper, there is substantial damage to the block where the crank counter weights made contact (thrust bearing failure?), the center main journal has a spun bearing and the #2 rod is completely detonated. Based on the amount of damage to the bearings and the block, it seems clear that there was some sort of low oil pressure situation that wore the hell out of all the bearings, caused several to spin in their journals, and eventually wore away the #2 rod bearing until the tolerance was so large that the rod broke apart from repeatedly striking the crank. Either way, it’s all f*cked now. By some miracle the heads look good and all the valves in #2 sit flush against the seats from as far as I can tell. According to European Auto Salvage in Allentown, PA: ‘it just needs a fuel pump’. Right...

Update #1: so here's the result the compression test of my salvage yard S4: 7 out of 8 cylinders have between 200psi and 210psi and one has zero (and I mean ZERO) compression - not even a blip (#2 cylinder). There has to be a valve open (or there's no piston... LOL) to have that little compression. For anyone who thought this car was too nice to part out, I assure you - it isn't. The guy I bought it from said, and I quote, "It runs good, just needs a fuel pump"...sure, you dumb *** . Fortunately I'm no virgin when it comes to non-running 928's so I always buy them under the assumption that they're completely f*cked which this one looks to be. The motor is coming out and apart this week - I'll post some details on what I find.

Original Post: I just picked up this automatic ’89 S4 and I only need some odds and ends off it for my track project so pretty much everything is for sale. (JHowell37 has first dibs on the head lights). It needs a fuel pump so I’m going to throw one in and see how it runs. I’ll also get some compression numbers too. The cluster doesn’t appear to work so I’m not even sure what the mileage is. It was abandoned by a PO so it was issued an Abandonment Title from the state of Pennsylvania. I’m thinking of selling the brakes as a complete S4 upgrade with everything for an OB guy to upgrade to full S4 brakes front and rear. It’s sitting in my garage right now so I can poke around and see what’s there. Initial look appears that there are a lot of good parts on this one... but I'm sure there will be a few surprises. (Landseer, you still looking for a trans?) If there’s something specific you need, feel free to PM me.

That's funny. I should bring it up to the shop so I can park it next to your '89 GT from DC... I grabbed this one because I missed out on that one. Funny stuff.

I would be interested in the belly pans and lower front spoiler if they are there. Ed

That looks like one of the half dozen or so Velvet Red Metallic S4's built in 1989.

Any chance it has sport seats? I'd be interested. Thanks!

I'll check this week and let you know. I don't think there is a spoiler but I need to double check.

I guessing there are some other issues. It seems like none of the electronics are working and someone's been messing around in the fuse panel

Shot me a PM with an email address and I'll send you a pic of the seats, they may be sport and I did verify that all the motors work on the driver's seat.

Too many 928's ending up like this, more S4's too! If they would only join Rennlist to get inspiration to fix their cars.

It's too nice to part. Shame to hear this, for such a nice color. The chassis should be saved.

I would be interested by that "I’m thinking of selling the brakes as a complete S4 upgrade with everything for an OB guy to upgrade to full S4 brakes front and rear" depending of the breaks condition and price...
