Default Experience with electric exhaust cutout

Hi,

As posted in my thread "V8 Sound" I'm currently looking for a variable exhaust option to have the choice between the civilized sound and the goosbump broaaammm sound.
I found some links in this forum which look very nice:
http://www.racereadyperformance.com/...ction=Electric Exhaust Cutout Kit (Dual)
http://quicktimeperformance.com/OVAL/
http://www.jegs.com/c/Exhaust_Exhaus...11529/10002/-1
http://www.928m.com/parts/exhaustcutout.php

Does anyone of you have some of this stuff on his shark?
Is it reliable? And most of all, does the flaps still close properly after some years of operation?

best regards, Heinrich

Hey another Heinrich!

Sorry I can't give you any experience with it, but this is on my list for this winter if I can scrape together the change. I figure it will give me the best of both worlds. Wide open exhaust for dyno/track days and stock the rest of the time.

Sorry it won't help you decide, but I think we're on the same page.

You should also put some info about your car in your sig, so people know what you're driving.

Let us know if you go with it and how it works out and I'll do the same.

Opening the exhaust up will change the tune of the motor. Carb engines seem to handle it pretty well, but a FI engine may find the lack of back pressure changes the tune too much. Other than that they work well. I wonder how much the blocked off "Y" leg makes on turbulence when shut.

Should be simple enough to have two maps for the ECU to switch via relays through the coding plug if it is a problem.
From what I understand most stock 928's are way fat at WOT anyway.

Hi

I did consider an electric cut out for mine , which is around 130 DB at full chat (7000 plus revs)

But....With my twin S2 system I finally figured it was too much work for too little return....

So now I have probably the loudest 928 exhaust in the UK ...bar none lol..as I have X-pipes at the front....NO front boxes.....No middle resonators....and only a rear straight through box designed by Paul Anderson.

Its my daily driver of course.

Oh by the way , there was no appreciable effect on fueling and I do have a wide band so would have noticed....

The only effect I have noticed is the odd blowback on the overrun....which sounds great lol....and if I do that on Nitrous I get green flames so I am told lol.

I must admit to driving it a little carefully around town to not annoy the Police but on the open road its truly an amazing sound and most cars hear me coming and instantly move over

I wouldn't worry too much about noise with UK Police as I think they expect a Porsche to sound loud....

All the best Brett

I've cone some further research into this, and looking around the forums, the electronic cutouts have a habit of leaking after a few months' use..
If anything I would go for a manual version, but now I'm thinking I'll just do it and remove the cats and put in an X-Pipe....

Any Views?

Raven, have you ever applied that unit (or seen it done) to a 928? I saw a system like that on a vette the other day with the valve closed and I can confirm that it's definitely a quiet setup. I didn't hear it in unrestricted mode, but this seems like a pretty neat idea for the 928, especially since the pumpkin takes up so much room I would imagine implementing it might not be all that difficult.

Wouldn't the leaking issues that I researched still happen with these Aussie mufflers? All of the videos seem to show that it runs off a butterfly valve system....

Got this from a Subaru forum...

"If you use the cutout a lot, like I do, eventually the face plate of the cutout will not make a perfect seal against the opening. This is due in part to the soot build up on the opening and the fact that the motor will get slightly over torqued over time"
