I won't comment on any of the headaches it may cause to import a car here from Japan, but getting a GTS at any of those prices seems to allow for a lot of wiggle room to import... but on a teacher's sallary it was never gonna happen anyway

Well Gio,
As I've purchased previously in Tokyo, and imported a mint S4 for my personal use, I know all the steps ..... here's what I can do to help: you front the $$ , and I'll buy the GTS in my name and arrange importation to New Westminster, BC - do all customs clearance and registration/taxes, etc: then, I'll either have the car shipped to me, or fly out and have the flex plate and TB checked before driving it home ..... I'll even swing down to Alabama so you can drive your new car: following that, I will drive & maintain the GTS until it reaches 25 ..... and then retitle to you. Sound fair ...

You could probably do that... the problem might be keeping the Canada registration up to date and legal for them (the Canadians if you were not living there or a land owner/home owner there), but I bet that would work... Long road... at the end when you FINALLY got your US registered GTS it would probably be cheaper to have just bought one here in the states along the way, but you won't know that break point till you fly by it, and right now the market might favor a Japan buy...weak dollar is NOT in your favor though... actually I have not compared it to the Yen, so maybe you are not to bad on that point. Shipping will still be costly and I am sure there are more than a few Canadian hoops that will cost $XXXX to jump through too!

Those are a very interesting prices... how difficult would it to have the car registered in Canada and then taken into the US as tourist car? So I could buy a 1995 GTS, have it shipped to Canada for less than $15k, register it in Canada for 10 years and then import it to the US as a 25 year old collectors car?

You're lucky in the US with tax only at 6%. For me, importing the car from outside the European Union would cost like 40% if not more. Which is ridiculous, considering it's a german car, made in EU.

Used import car taxes in Aruba is 40% on used cars and 50% on new cars. Trucks are about 17%.

But you'd probably have to ship the car first anyway, and the costs add up. Too bad Hong Kong became chinese teritory again in 1997, would have been a nice place to "europenize" japanese cars if it was still UK territory.
