It's been said on several older headlight threads that the 80/100 bulbs do fine with the stock wiring and don't need relays.

If you're changing the bulbs for a whiter color anyway, seems like it makes sense to go with the 80/100 bulbs, knowing that they might not pass inspection if the inspector is being REALLY picky. I don't think the place I take my car for inspection will notice the bulbs or the lenses, or care if they do notice.

 

In California we don't have such aggressive inspection policies. Looking at some of the rolling wreckage on the highways that's a good thing and a bad thing. Generally you won't get hassled unless they are aimed improperly. On older cars that I had that used 4ea. 6" lights, I replaced the high beams with KC daylighters(130W) and relays/big wire to the battery, and never once was called on it.

 

kinda been behind on my post on Renn. Here's some pics of the new H4's I received. Hoping to install them tonight. Also going to the 80/100 bulbs that the other 928 masters have spoke of.

 

Tried to get the 80/100 tonight at Autozone and O'Reileys. No luck 55w was as high as they go. Can these be bought retail or do I need to put an order in with Roger? Was hoping to do the headlights tomorrow.

 

Try an independent auto parts store, NAPA, 4x4 supply or speed shop. They aren't street legal so you won't find them at most generic auto parts places.

One question I have though looking at this pic of the glass for the H4 the pie shape on the lens should point out when their installed correct? I believe it may be for the high beams.

 

Changng the bulbs later is very quick & easy - just order the upgraded bulbs for later instal.

The lens pattern you show should be oriented as you show when viewed from the front - its fr the low beams actually - on Bosch H4's the top of the wedge part is horizontal. However it does not look like yours are intended to be mounted that way from the rest of the pattern....

No Roger, nothing like that. He was trying to get them "tonight" and as wonderful as your service is, I didn't think you could manage that so I gave a suggestion more in line with his timeframe.

 

Where'd you get that chrome ring? Look different to my stock '78.

 

Stock as far as I know, original to the car. But there are lots of things that are a little different about the 78's and maybe this is one.

 

I tried the 80/100 bulbs in my H-5's, went through a lot of bulbs and melted several socket connectors before I gave up and went with standard-wattage Silverstars. Casual mathematical observations: The 100W main beams use more than the fuse rating if there's no resistance in the wiring. The fuse never let go so there must be significant resistance. Another too-common application of Fig Newton's Third Law of Electrical Reciprocity, this time where the wiring heats up to protect the fuse and relay. If you are serious about getting your money's worth from high-wattage bulbs, invest in dedicated wirng and some relays to guarantee the performanceand to protect the stock wiring and headlight relay. Note the cost of a new headlight relay and do the math.
