Pondering GTS Production
From some info posted long ago, the 139 North American '94 GTS cars have VINs (last 5 digits) in the range of 20061 to 20199.
My car is 20175 and the compliance sticker on the door jamb shows a manufacture date of 12/93. So 24 more cars were built after mine before Porsche closed the book on 94 my production.
Makes me wonder, when did they build the first and last N.A. '94s? There has to be a lot of cost in starting up production, and with only 139 cars, is it possible they built them all over a couple months and then put the program on hold until time to build '95s? Didn't someone say they could turn out a couple 928s a day? Sounds like they could have done the 139 cars for N.A. in about 70 production days.
If that's how they did it, how could they accomodate special orders? Was there a point in late '93 or early '94 when the '94 m.y. was effectively over and they couldn't accommodate a special order any longer? Certainly they couldn't have gone off in a corner and built one car by itself.

I wonder if special order cars were placed towards the end of the production run....
I know my 90 wasn't completed until very late in 90 and had one of the last vin numbers for the year...
Good questions

Occurs to me, there were also 506 ROW VINs. Would they have built these at the same time as North American cars? If the model year had a total built of 645 units, then at 2 a day, it could have gone something like ten months.
Maybe most of the NA cars were built near the beginning (since my 20175 of 20199 was in December) and then they did mostly ROWs after that? Perhaps they could work in a NA special order during 1994 by scheduling it in among the ROW production still being built?

Tom,
I think Porsche's production year usually ended in June and started in July. My '94 has a 156 number, and it was also built in December '93.

the 1st US 94 GTS had an invoice date of 5/93, last US 94 had invoice date of 5/94
those are just invoice dates, Gary's had an invoice date of 1/94
if I had more build dates from car tags I could get a better estimate of production dates
give me a bit and I'll pull out the ROW sheets and confirm production was simultaneous

per your stickers, so far it appears invoice date is 1 month after production date
which makes 94 US production approximately 4/93-4/94
1st ROW 94 GTS shows invoice date of 5/93 which should be production of 4/93 matching US start
now, if we match US to RoW serial #S
087 US 7/93 087 RoW 8/93
165 US 12/93 165 RoW 9/93
185 US 2/94 185 RoW 10/93
which makes 94 US production approximately 4/93-4/94

Tom,
I just looked up your car. It's 165 according to Chucky Z.

First 19 US '94 VINs 0061-0079 were done before normal model year cut of point in June/July. Without knowing Rixter's data I would have estimate these to be GTS production dates:
Those would have been splits to four model years if GTS production would have been normal where MY changes during German summer holiday period. As Rixters data shows even ROW production was somewhat skewed but not to extend US models were.
Its clear at least US model production was sporadic and there could have been several month(s) long period(s) when they were not done at all. As number of ROW cars were larger and most of them were made to order its likely production stop(s) were shorter but there could have been them also for ROW production.
