On my track car I was able to pop up the ball cup off of the ball....pull the rod into the car up to where the support bracket is on the top of the torque tube and I had to "unscrew" the rod at that point leaving the actual ball cup in the insulation/bracket under there. When I drop the rear end to put in my new 90GT tranny, I'll reach up in there and get the ball cup. So ..yes the whole front rod/ball cup is gone. Colin's shifter setup still uses the rear rod though.
P.S...here's a teaser pic... I can post more if colin/rog want me to

$150 for the new system. Makes the front coupler redundant.
A new machined bracket is added at the shifter apature. Need to raise or remove the center console for fitment. This is far easier than changing the front coupling.
Has a quality heims joint for smooth action.
Requires that you put new plastic bushings in the rear coupler. They come with the kit.
We are also going to add new rear bushings in metal with no elongation in the shaft hole.
This will make an even more precise shift.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?
