Default Light on dash Says Belt Ten

I was eccerating this morning on the way to work I felt what seem to feel like a miss fire in the engine and a light came on the dash saying Belt Ten and some kind of picture next to it (it look like a headlight switch picture).
Does any one have an idea of what that might be, the car continued to run fine but the light stayed on the dash until I reached work and then I shut the car off and restarted it and the light was not on.
I fear this may have something to do with the timming belt and I sure do not want that to break as my engine is what I believe to be interference type, and the belt could ruin my engine if it were to break.
I do not know the last time the belt was changed or adjusted as I bought the car used and that owner had no records of maintenance.
Has some one out there had this light come one and found out what it means. Thanks Tony

My car is a 1986 (928)

Yep timing belt tensioner light.

If you have no history on the belt service then time to do it.

Take a careful look at all the components including the pullies, water pump, tensioner etc.

Tony,
How cold was it? I had that happen one time when the temp dropped to 35 degrees. Started the car and belt tens alarm came on. The belt was on the loose end of the tension adjustment when I checked it. When I shut the car down it was warm enough and expanded to extinguish the belt tens alarm. There is a time delay on the alarm (3 minutes?). Re-tensioned and all was OK.

If you don't know when the belt was last changed, it should be done NOW!!

You might read up on your car and learn some of the things to check and maintain. If you drive a 928 around with minimal care and attention it will get real expensive.

If your car is an automatic be sure to check the flex plate pressure and consider upgrading (or augmenting) that clamp as this issue will destroy the motor but is inexpensive to prevent.

Good luck,
-Joel.

Timing belt is loose enough to trip warning. CHECK TENSION IMMEDIATLEY! Since you do not know when last service , do this. At least the belt. Yours is an interference engine and breakage will destroy some valves if not more things. You cannot 'drive it easy'. My belt (86.5) spun on crank on start up. Was lucky only bent 2 valves, however was unlucky as to change motor must come out of car due to head stud clearances.

If this service has not been done you should: replace belt, replace waterpump (since your there) replace all rollers, check cam gears (replace if anodization worn, will be shiny) rebuild tensioner (or replace with porkensioner) If you do this yourself cost is about $600 (or close), if done by shop will be much more. Hope this helps and not to disappointing.

I suspected that this may be what it was.
Iam a back yard machanic at best is this something that I can do with out the car being on a lift or any special tools or should this be done by a shop?
I hope it is something I can do as my funds to send it to a shop may not be an option.
What or how do you re-tension a belt or for that matter change it I have a disk but could not find on the disk where to see what, or how to do it on the disk, I spoke to someone who said it is a big job, is that true?

It was not cold at all when this happened it was about 80 degrees as i live in North Florida. I guess I am going to have to learn how to change a belt and more it seems.

It's a pretty big job but very doable at home.
Do some searching on this site it's been written up and photographed many times.
Even try googling 928 timing belt.
Took me some time to get all the parts and tools, so I'd familiarize yourself with the parts/tools needed first off and start ordering.

Tony first I would suggest that you dont start the engine until the timing marks have been verified and the belt tension is correct.
, from the info provided it sounds as if the timing belt may already have jumped a tooth, and running the engine could damage it it to the tune of about 5K dollars.
I suggest that you disconnect the battery first so it cant be started

Tony - If it comes to it, here's my adventure in this project (aka TB/WP and Porkentensioner update). http://reutterwerk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10896

Just follow the directions based on several sources and take your time:
https://rennlist.com/forums/5540367-post.html
and buy a copy of John Kelly's manual for $25(?)

This sound like something more out of my range to do so I am in serch of my next option find a person who can doit for me.
Is there some easy way to at least try to tighen the belt with out taking the whole front of the engine apart until I find a person who can change it all for me? I need to drive the car and I don't want to ruin it but I am at work and I have no other way home?
