UPDATE 2 (My Shark won't respond)
First of all thanks to everyone who weighed in with advice regarding my 1983 manual trans, that would not crank and then would not start.
traced the problem back to the fuel pump. Replaced the pump and filter and sure as **** it started up idle was good. I let it run for about 10 minutes and there was no knocking, tapping or smoke. Now as far as under the hood what should my next repairs / replacement / rebuild be, I was thinking a new dist. cap , rotor, wires, timing belt and water pump, all fluids belts and hoses including vacuum lines ???
Second the tranny is stuck in gear but the shifter moves ez. What should I do so I can get it out of gear.

Start another thread but you should do a search first. Sounds like the ball cup is bad but I'm no expert. Have you removed the shift boot and taken a look. Plenty of posts on how to replace it.

replace the fuel lines

I would do a general tune up plugs, dist cap etc. but around i believe 60,000 miles your suppose to replace the belts and since the motor is apart you might as well replace the water pump but fuel lines is a good idea too.

Ok will do the fuel lines and yes the shifter boot is removed. I was able to shift the car into neutral when I had it towed home. ( I bought the car non-running ). Also will start a new thread just really wanted to thanks you guys for the help so far and see if i'm on the right track regarding restoration.

If you have not already done so, read the FAQ at the top of the page, it will take a while to go through but after your done a lot of your questions will be answered.
