short fan belt for 79 without airpump?
I need a short fan belt for the 79 lemons project since we removed the airpump...I heard there is a part out there, from a power trimmer...but don't know where to get one?

My neighbor is going to lemons in Ohio this week 91 3000 Mitb I have been helping him getting it going. Is your an auto? His crew says the Porsche's always break at least the 944's do.

I bought one at NAPA, and one at a hardware store.
13mm|1/2" x 20" for 86mm|3-3/8" fan pulley (increased cooling option)
13mm|1/2" x 21" for 106mm|4-3/16" fan pulley

Your 79 will be just like my 78. I just did this a few months ago. According to DR, the belt is a 21" belt, by 1/2" wide. Mine's been on for a couple of thousand miles now with absolutely no problem. Bought it at a lawnmower store after first checking with NAPA and Carquest (neither had a belt that size) Remove fan. Insert belt and pull up when you re-install fan. Also, the alternator belt (or PS pump? Can't remember) has to come off the lower pulley first in order to put on the 21" belt.
Woops - just read Ken's post. Indeed, make sure you know your pulley size. The standard pulley on the car should be the smaller one.

Iceman, you may want to do what I did. I shimmed my viscouse fan out toward the radiator so it's pully is inline with the PS pully. I ran a belt around the viscous fan, the crank pully and tensioned it with the PS pump. It is a better solution in my opinion as it allows you to properly tension the belt and replacement is a whole lot easier as well. PM me for pics and measurements.

944's have the same oiling issues the 928 does & have axle-clutch issues that the 928 does not...after proper testing and setup I do expect the lemons 928 to be reliable enough to finish the race.... I'm quite confident it can do it.....

I did this with my 84, and then just ended up pulling the fan and just going electric. Scots is electric as well. just by the largest electric fan available, tie it into the bottom of the radiator and use the stock fan relay or an aftermarket one. I can help you do this. S4 fans work well too, as you can build in some redundancy if needed. (only one goes on via temp switch automatically, and the other can be manual back up using two relays)

Then, use the stock AC fan in front of the radiator and the $45 fan you get at pepboys for the rear of the radiator for a push , pull set up which scot uses in all temps. just raced at laguna in 85 degree heat with no heat issues. not even the first white line. (without fans, it will over heat bad)

Brian, first let me appologize for not getting pics to you last night. I'll go out and take some now.
Regarding the A/C fan. I know from experience that you can wire it to run all the time with no detrimental effect to the fan motor. One of my cars had it wired together when I bought it due to a faulty temp switch in the radiator. I didn't know any better since it was my first 928 and it ended up running that way for almost two years before I noticed and replaced the temp switch.

That said, I ran my '85 and '86 all summer with just the A/C fan, even in 90° temps. (I didn't have working A/C.) Once I fix the A/C in the '86, I have a dual 11" SPAL unit to go in, controlled via the VW rad switch.

im thinking we are going to have to go with a alternate radiator brian. like in the v8olvo, the large mercedes rad and some electric fans will do the trick and cheap. remember we dont have to use only porsche parts.
