This is probably unusual to bump a thread that is 4 years old. I have been pondering these carrier bearings since getting my car back on the road with a fresh timing belt.
I pulled up a PET pic on Auto Atlanta, and wanted to know if the two bearings labeled #6 are the carrier bearings? The part number is 900 052 122 00.

Hi Andy,
As shown, those two bearings support the snout of the rear flex plate which is bolted to the torque converter, thereby also partially supporting and locating the torque converter within the front transmission housing.
They should be replaced when refreshing the torque tube bearings and should be a WYIT considered procedure for all auto 928s.
People do call them carrier bearings.

I found my old record of replacing the torque tube back in 2002. I can hear the bearings growling on this rebuilt one now in addition to the horrid sound the carrier bearings make. The work order invoice does NOT show these carrier bearings being replaced.

This is interesting. Are there also torque converter bearings? I ask since I am looking at an old work order from the PO and I see torque converter bearing replacement but the part no is for the carrier bearings. My car makes a rattling sound at idle and very low rpms. I have ruled out everything I can without pulling the transaxle. Car also had tt replacement recently by a very reputable shop.

Yes these same bearings are also known as "torque converter bearings."
Depending on the MY, rattling in the driveline at the rear could mean the rear flex plates rivets are loosening that hold them together. The standard fix if this is the problem is to replace the rivets with nuts and bolts.
Some MYs used bolts at the rear flex plate while other MYs used rivets, IIRC.

I am hearing rattling and a loud grinding/shrieking noise. The transmission shifts fine. I know the shrieking is the carrier bearings/ torque converter bearings; however, I think the actual rattling sound I'm hearing are the torque tube bearings failing, again.
When I did my timing belt, I ended up doing a flexplate pinch collar release again, but no movement was present since I only drove the car 200 miles since the last procedure doing this. The front flexplate bolts were tight and still have not dropped my heat shields in the rear to check flexplate bolts at the back. The car needs to be put on a rack to have the exhaust dropped. It's too heavy to remove it as it's welded all the way back after the cats.

I have a similar noise that I can't track down. Going to have the carrier bearings and TT bearings done in spring.

I'm a little PO'ed that my rebuilt tube is already on it's way out after 11 years and only 52,000 miles. Is this normal?

My rebuilt torque tube only lasted 12 years and ~30K miles before Bill and I replaced the torque tube bearings this winter. Less miles, but probably more torque...

more than likely the bearings you replaced them with were not as good as the ones that came out.
That said what seems to kill the bearings are lots of slow driving this lets the cats heat up the underside of the car thus the TT also runs pretty hot
