$500 for Strip & PC? (Updated 9/30) Powder Coat & Paint Color Question
Hi Guys,
A lot happening rite now; I finally got the new plugs/wires/ignition components installed, and temporarily fixed the the leaking cam cover spark plug well seals; no more oil in the wells! The car is running much better now, but she needs an intake R&R which leads me to my point in question:
I was planning on having the intake runners & plenum powder coated red while I am doing the intake work. I really want them to be Guards Red, however I know that coming across Guards Red powder coat is not going to happen, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a quality high-temp engine enamel that is a close match to Guards Red, as I am trying to keep everything as close to Porsche colors as possible. At that point I can choose between powder coating and painting depending on the color match. If I go with painting it will be professionally done as well. Also, how many coats of powder if I go that route?
Thanks.
-Mark

I also considered powder coating my intake and valve covers....but the time and expense led me to using a special "crinkle" hi temp paint that the race shop has been using for years on Miatas....heres a pic

Well, I just called a local place that from what I've heard, does very good work. He quoted me "about $500" to strip the old intake components and do 1 coat of powder. That seems outrageous to me....he said he new exactly what parts I was referring to and that he had done them before....can anyone weigh in on that price? From what I've read here that price is very high.
Painting is starting to look a lot better. I'm not cheap by any means, and have no problem spending the money if the results are good. However, if I can get the same type of result by painting and it will be a fraction of the cost, well...
On a side note, does anyone know of a good abrasive blaster on Long Island?

Jeez, even in 'the OC' I can get the three-piece S4 intake and valve covers stripped, dipped, smoothed, and powdercoated (with clear PC over the top of that) for $300. Maybe all the individual spider runners are a bigger PITA?

That's possible. As mentioned he said he had done the work on an '85 before, and I realize that the '85-86 intakes have a bit more surface area to strip & cover, but $500 just seems over the top....

I don't know if this sort of paint is what you are looking for.

I haven't used this product myself but have used many other auto restoration products and tools offered by Frost and have never been disappointed.

I called another guy for a quote on the stripping alone, we'll see what transpires from that...still open to any suggestions for a local stripper {no pun intended} and powder coater...perhaps even a place in NJ that I can ship the parts to...

I was going the powder coat route the only person in town here wanted $1000 for strip and powder coat, I found several places online that would have been around $250-$300, I really didn't want to wait, so I had them media blasted and went with high temp paint and clear instead.

Hey Greg Gray now thats the quality of replating fasteners you sent me thru importation. Good quality of replating on the fasteners there. Soon, I will have my fasteners back or have replated fasteners again.
