Default Steering Rack WYAIT?

Hey guys,

My steering rack seals are toast, definitely time for a rebuilt rack install. I'd like to replace the typical wear items while I am in there and I would appreciate some input on what you would recommend.

The rack list so far:
rack
lines (all ready replaced hi pressure hose)
tie rod assemblies
rack bushings - going with solid
fluid resivour (already replaced)
pump belt (already replaced)

Once the r&r is complete, I'll reset the ride height and get it in for an alignment.

And I'm also going to r&r the oil pan gasket and motor mounts while I'm at it.

Wahoo - good times.

Thanks. -Ed

My recommendation is to only change the tie rods if they need it. If not, you won't need an alignment. ($$)

Not a bad idea, I'll see what they look like when I'm in there. Will definitely need an alignment, its been a while since its had one, and with the new rack going in with new bushings, and the new tires I want to make sure its set up properly.

Thanks.

your going to need an alignment since your replacing the motor mounts that means the lower control arms will be moved.
I would inspect the inner/outer tie rods , if one is loose then I would go ahead and replace all of them.
Fit the 2 fender washers to each MM (this adds about 3mm total thickness)on the top stud and make sure the lower stud is just flush with the nut after its tight ( this will prevent the stud from hitting the rack when its put in place.
Get 4 new sealing washers for the banjo bolts ( these fit the rack lines)
Replace the rack boots ( previously mentioned)

My input.....good time to clean the area! All that built up oil from the pan gasket and power steering hoses makes a mess. With so may items out of the way its a great time to clean and degrease. It will make reassembly and future work easier too.

^^^^^ What Afshin says. Do a MAJOR clean on it with the pans off but everything else in place. Take it to a commercial car wash place where they have a grease trap in the drain. Lift the car up on stands, and use your favorite engine cleaner/degreaser on it. Rinse with their water down their drains. This will take a whole lot of the greasy/dirty out of this greasy dirty job.

Oh-- Locate and identify everything that's leaking under there before you start. Fix all of them as part of your repair process. PS hoses are a favorite, for instance. Oil sump gasket another favorite, along with oil sender, oil cooler hose connections, cam covers, tower plug seals, etc. With everything cleaned, the leaks you miss or ones that come along later will be easy to identify early.

Oh yeah, believe me, a thorough cleaning is in order. I've already done a ton of cleaning under there from the leaking power steering hose and the oil pan gasket.

I'm a bit **** about working on my cars. Any job takes me 3x longer because I have a really hard time putting a dirty part back on my cars (and motorcycles).
