Default Alternator/Gauge Problem

1988 928 S4

Upon start up my voltage gauge remains pegged at zero. After a few minutes the gauge jumps to show a voltage of 12 to 12.5. No other warning lights.
This has been going on for a few months. So far no dead battery or starting problems.

Any ideas?

Thks in advance.

The first thing I think I'd do is disassmble and inspect the 14 pin connector under the hood on the passenger side fender. Would be looking for corrosion in the pins, plus, broken solder joints where the wires connect to the various pins. Specifically, I'd be looking for a break in the exciter wire circuit, which runs through that connector at terminal #1 within the plug.

What year, BTW, is your shark?

After doing the above check the voltage at the hot post with the engine running and gauge reading zero. See what you come up with.
If your showing a charge then the gauge has bad connection

Mine did this for a while when I brought it out of storage. I replaced the battery, and drove it a few times a week as I replace lines/hoses/belts/etc and it seems to have gone away. I'd point to gauge connections, bad grounds, especially if you aren't exhibiting any dead battary or dim lights that would point to alt failure.

Good luck!
