Won't idle when cold
#16
Bill,
In your 85, we have a different ISV than the S4 cars (not that it is any better). For our OB's we do NOT have to remove the intake. Simply take off the maf and you will see it under there. I cna be removed and unplugged and replaced without an intake removal.
BTW- our OB ISV's are available directly from Roger as a Bosch for $120-$125!!

Failure to idle when not-warm is a common symptom of a bad Mass-Air Sensor. You can send your MAS to Kevin at www.injectionlabs.com for testing (free except for shipping.)
Your '87 does not have a warm up regulator other than the microcode in the LH that depends upon the output of the Temp-II sensor.
Unlike the later cars, on an S3 the ISV can be R&R'd without removing all of the intake. But, if you are removing the intake to replace breather hoses, then yes, you will find the ISV. Replace the (all of them) o-rings in the air guide and throttle body also.
