Default I could've sworn I had a chrome exhaust tip on my S4!!

Hi Everyone,

I hand-washed my "new to me" 1988 S4 for the first time yesterday and the oval tail pipe was black. I thought the exhaust tip was black from the exhaust, but when I washed it, it was black because it was black, haha.

I seem to remember it had a chrome tail pipe tip when I bought the car... or so I thought.

Could it have fallen off in the 3 months since I bought the 928? Or is there no oval chrome exhaust pipe tip on an 1988 S4?

VTY,
Joe Taylor

Not sure about an 88 but my 90 has a chrome like sleeve with some kind of set screws over the exhaust tip. So it sounds like it may have come off while you were driving.

My 87 S4 had a black tip and my 90 GT has twin black tips. Not sure what the other year cars came with since most everyone I know has RMB's.

Hi Calgary Ole,

Is it an oval exhaust pipe/tip on your 1990 S4? If so, I wonder where I could buy a replacement exhaust tip?

Maybe someone here on Rennlist has one they don't want anymore, one of those RMB folks.. vroom, vroom...

I dont remember ever seeing a chrome oval tip.
The GT rear exhaust has 2 options either black or chrome slip on tips, you need 2 tips for the GT, they are about 55.00 a piece

Joe, the car is at home so I cant check the shape but from my ever failing memory my 90 has a dual tip with the chrome sleeves on each tip. They where about 6 inches and slipped on with a set screw. I removed them some time ago for cleaning. I believe my exhaust is stock but cant be 100% sure.
They were round or maybe slightly oval.

They are not black and they are not chrome. They are actually metal colour, but discoulour easily from heat and soot. If you keep at it they become metallic again. Stainless I think they are. We're talking oval S4 type - there was only one kind. Other models are different.

Default SS exhaust tip

Mine was painted black and began to chip so I used paint remover and then polished with Mothers chrome/metal polish and it came up looking like chrome but polished stainless. Minimum maintanence , hit it with metal polish couple times a season.
