Car came with Michelin Pilot Sport summer tyres...............worked well in dry and wet conditions. Replaced them twice with the same tyre but they were the original 16" which are now almost impossible to find.

I bought a set of 17" turbo twists that 928 Int had on sale one year so had to try the then new PS2s............what a tyre but what a wear rate and when I was caught in a spring snow squall..........useless.

I now run Pilot Sport A/S 235F and 275R....................work great for the driving I do and no worries should the weather change half way through a trip................the 400 wear rate is major consideration.

This was one of the shining features of the Fulda quantum elites.
I had to drive them on ice and snow and they just gripped and went even though they were a summer tire. They had NEARLY as much grip on ice as the Blizzaks I have for the winter now.

Yeah. And at the rate wheels are getting bigger within five years there won't be nothin' smaller than 22" available and we'll just have to start painting our rims with rubber cement.

These are a great tyre (Ventus RS2's) if you can get them in the size you want.
I have them on the front of my 928. Have travelled 30,000K's with them and last weekend spent 80 minutes on a race track as fast as I was prepared to go (Sandown Park in Melbourne) and they don't even look like wearing out. A ton of grip.

Rears are Toyo TR1's. Although are wearing fine (same K's as fronts) they kind of felt spungy on the track.

Hankook has a summer tire called Ventus V12.
Can you run a V12 on a V8?
Think they have 255/40/17. Not any wider in 17.

I just put a set of 225 - PS 2's up front. Great tire. At first I thought maybe I went a little overboard because of the price, but the ride/handling is 1st rate. Still on the fence about shelling out even more for the 295's on the rear. I am thinking about the V12's for the rears especially after a thread posted a few weeks ago on mis matched fronts and rears.

With the wheels you have on the car the Kumho XS tire would work well, a 255/40 17 on the front and a 295/35 17 on the rear. I am running them on my car and they really stick well and the price is not bad. BTW they fit under the fenders without any mods usig 60 mm offset wheels. They are soft so I do not expect great wear, maybe to summers of fun. The 295/35 tire on the rear is as close to the stock tire height as you can get compared to a 275/40 or a 285/40 tire.

As stated there are limited choices in the 17's at the larger sizes.

Kumho XS seem to have a low rating in their group. I'm not looking for an extreme summer tire as I would like to get more than a summer out of them!

The history of Firestone (remember the Ford crap) isn't good, but I think they focused on not having that issue occur again. Firestone is Bridgestone.

I'm leaning towards the Bridgestone RE760's and putting on the 265's up front and a set of 275's in the rear.

Isn't 265 just about the widest you'd want on a 9"? Assuming 265/40, you may have rub at less-than full lock if your ride height isn't "just exactly so." And it isn't the width, it's the extra 4mm of sidewall. All of course, modulo your wheel offset. And of course the tire too.

I think 265 is right on the limit of what can be stuck under a stock S4+ front. Even with a 245 the difference between a 45 and 40 aspect ratio is the difference between rubbing and not rubbing when mounted on a wheel with an offset that isn't absolutely perfect.

I don't remember what wheels you have, but, I would be concerned about 265s working on my 9" Fiskes. I suspect that 265/40 would result in some rubbing when the suspension is compressed - say in a hard small radius turn.

yes, 265 is the limit on the 9" wheel.

I have fit 275's up front with the 9.5" wheel and 73mm offset without rubbing the fender at a 160mm front end height.

I have the a set of Super Cups from DR. Don't know the specific offset.

Maybe I should just stay happy with the 255's and 265's

Not sure how exact their 'Section Width' reporting is in the Tire Rack spec sheets.
Wonder if the RE760's are wide or narrow at their 265 width tire.
The Kumho SPT's I have have really rounded shoulders so that helps minimize rub.

Car and Driver just did a "cheap" performance tire (<$200 per) comparison test a couple of months ago. I suggest you give the article a read.

We just put Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Positions on my wife's A3 and I think they are excellent tires. Where the original Pirelli P Zero Rosso's could not handle the torque from a start, these hold like glue. Quieter and smoother, too.
