Default tire time-one of two to chose

So its time for a shoe change. Currently have 255/40/17 on the front 9" wheels and 265/40/17 on the rear 10" wheels.

The wheels are SuperCups that were sold by 928 Specialist many years ago.

SO I'm leaning towards the RE760's or the Firehawk wide ovals.

The RE760's have the exact size, while the FireHawks don't come in 255/40's.

I could get away with 265's up front and then run either 275's in the rear or go for the Firehawk 285's!

Any comments or suggestions?

I bought Hankook Vestus S2's and though they don't have many miles on them. They seem to be a very good tire at a vey good price point. Replace Kumho Ecsta's which were just okay.

John,
I'm getting ready to put new 760's on the '88... GREAT tires, grip well, are relatively quiet compared to others and wear really well
just my $9.28

I put RE750's on my Mustang and it was LESS fun than the 10 year old PepBoys tires, no more wheel spin ;(

I had a client in Phoenix who put the Pep Boys rubber on his car (not a 928) and took very regular advantage of their mileage guarantee. He liked to spin them a lot. Slippery as hell they were, but very low $$/mile. Weren't suitable for even a riding mower, in my opinion, but he thought they were a great deal.

My memories of reviews from 928 owners with the RE760 are that they really loud by mid treadlife.

-----

We should start a tire master thread, with grading similar to what Tire Rack uses but with only 928 results included. Many of the ratings categories are subjective, but it might be a place to start.

Just to throw it out there...

I used to run Kumho Ecsta SPT's and found them very nice. Dry was pretty good, but sometime unpredictable. Wet was very good.

I now run the Nitto INVO's. Great in the dry. Super predictable! I know exactly how hard I can push before they break loose on me. In the wet (let's call it damp) they're okay. If it's more than a drizzle, forget it, they seem to hunt and the overall feel is not one of confidence. I will probably go back to the Kumho's after the front's are gone on these.

The concept of a "928 experience" tire rating chart is awesome. I have read Tire Rack's chart a hundred times and it does not match what I read on this forum most of the time. When "baby" needs new shoes I think we all can use a little help. If it's combined with Andrew O's fittament chart, it could be a seriously important basis of information for everybody!

John,
My experience with Firestone isn't good. Over the past 35 years, I've had 3 various Firestone tires' treads leave the carcase, at freeway speed, leaving damage to the vehicle each time.

One time, the tread went away clear to the steel belts, but the carcase kept full air pressure.

Personally, I will not voluntarily use a Firestone tire.

Built to a price, not to a standard, seems to be their unknown moto...

Technology may have marched on, and they may have gotten better, but who is it that has had a few tire recalls? I choose not to waist my money finding out if my luck has changed for the better....

Toyo R888

but seriously, look at the Vredestein tires. Click Here

If you can find any Fulda Quantum elite tires for your car, I would strongly recommend them too.

Great reviews. The only other thing to note is that 265 on a 10" rim is a pretty small piece of rubber. Personally I would be looking at 285/35 for the rear, and for the 9" front you can run upto a 275 depending on offset. But I would go with a 265.

17" tire selection sucks. I'll have to go through this in the spring as I've the same sizes you do.

Whoa... didn't notice these were 17's. 17's are getting harder (one of the reasons I stepped up to 18's). I think BF Goodrich still has some decent selection in the G-force line and T/A lines.
