What makes this tool important is that the hammer blow both turns the fastener and holds the socket or Phillips driver firmly on/in the fastener.

The only tool that will remove the Phillips fasteners on the side covers of a bike engine...
+1000..................worked on many, primarily Jap m/cycles, that you had to use the hand impact.

Make sure you beg borrow or steal the SEAL driver tool. A lot of oil comes out of those things if you get it wrong. Not that I'd know or anything.

I made my cam-hold down tools out of readily available bits at home depot. The build is written up on here somewhere.

Great tip, thanks Greg.

Having undone the rear cam caps on my '87 recently to replace the oil journal plugs, it was nerve-wracking using a breaker bar. I considered using a 3/8 air impact gun, but was worried about stripping, and using a hand impact didn't occur to me despite having one with a 1/2" drive sitting in the drawer.

When it comes time to fit S3 cams to my '89 I'll hopefully remember!

Well, it was either a 348 spyder + 30K service or 928GTS + stroker motor. I can't see how I could be learning any more that what I'm getting for my tuition at L'Ecole au Precision in Anaheim.....

Which is where many of us learned to use them, I'll bet. As well as to be really careful in aiming that hammer... Brings it back, I'll tell ya!
