9248 I believe are a set of cam saddles. Do you really need this tool? I have heard of people removing cams without this tool by just being careful when removing the bolts.

9248 is the pair of cam hold-down blocks for 87+ S4's. You also need 9226,which includes the threaded rods that insert into the spark plug holes to use them. 9226 works only for S3 heads.
And honestly you don't need either 9226 or 9248, you can just back the cam caps off one bolt at a time (splurge for a Hazet 990-8 XZN socket, trust me) with an air gun, then make them finger tight again, then go around the head and loosen each bolt 1 turn at a time until the cam is released from the head.
9234 is the cam seal and seal cover driver tool.
I have both (well, all 3) of these but they're all loaned out right now. When do you need them?

If you would have said I need to use the camshaft removal tools, I would have said, why yes, I have all that and you are welcome to them, for the 85&86 and 87 and up.
The cam seal tools are and have been on back order.

Hi Greg-
Newbie question- what's your concern about the use of the rattle gun on the cam cap bolts? We discussed this a while back (https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ml#post6184607) and I see you mentioning the hand-held impact. IIRC I tried the craftsman hand-held impact and didn't budge them (entirely possible that I don't actually know how to use it....
)
I massacred 2-3 bolts trying to loosen them by hand, and ultimately got up the courage to try the air impact on a low setting, worked perfectly. Is the concern that one might snap a bolt head? Or rapidly release the cam cap? Just curious

To use the hand impact, put the tool on the fastener, turn it firmly in the direction that you want the fastener to move and hold it firmly there, lined up as perfectly as possible, then whack the top hard with a hammer. The body that you are holding will be driven down the inclined ramps inside the tool, giving the socket and fastener some serious torque. What makes this tool important is that the hammer blow both turns the fastener and holds the socket or Phillips driver firmly on/in the fastener.
The only tool that will remove the Phillips fasteners on the side covers of a bike engine...

You are IMHO taking a chance of stripping the heads with anything other than a GOOD hand held impact.

No way would I do these with a air gun, hand held impact.
