944 guy and an engineless 928....swap possible?

Default 944 guy and an engineless 928....swap possible?

I know this is a blasphemous thought....but I was just offered a 928 with no engine nearly free.....I have an 84 944 that is nearly restored mechanically. But has miles to go on paint, body and interior.
I also have a full engine to transaxle spare driveline for the 944 that needs rebuilt......so Im a little invested in the 944 series already.

while I understand the massive power loss and all......how hard would it be to fit the 944 engine to the 928 transaxle....alternately would doing a complete drivetrain swap be more viable?

I just dont have enough room for all my toys.....and for the record..."get a bigger garage" is not an option sorry nor is "americanizing" the 928.

LOL...yeah im aware its not the prettiest of ideas....but it seemed better then watching another pretty car torn to pieces.

Ive got a friend who called right after I posted who thinks he wants to cheV8, so my question may already be invalid...but the curiousity remains....Ive seen power hungry 944'rs debate the 928 engine in their cars....

If you want to have fun and do something stupid, put a mod Ford cammer in it. The project is likely to set you back $25k, but didn't I say it would be stupid?

yeah Id sooner watch her torn to pieces by people who need the parts. If I wanted an american car id drive vettes and mustangs. I dont track....and as a daily driver even a 924 has enough power to get me tickets....

The 4-valve mod Ford engine is almost borderline acceptable to Porsche people, because that engine is a pretty much a knock-off copy of the 928 engine. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! ;-)

Hell I'd say go for it. There are folks here who have done all kinds of strange things, including turbines and an electric conversion (and that thing is seriously cool). You've got an essentially value-less car and a good powertrain. Won't be easy, probably damn difficult with motor mounts and torque tube/driveshaft being the biggest issues. But definitely different and at least a 928 will be on the road.

Practically, the motor mount issue may be interesting. Also, the TT may be shorter.

Probably, with decent 4.5l US engines almost free. But sometimes the crazy sh*t is just fun, and hey I'm not the one doing the work.

Please don't. I foresee a bunch of people on the Honda Civic forums bragging about taking down a Porsche 928. We have enough trouble with people getting confused and thinking the 928 is a 4 cylinder as it is!

This would be a fairly easy swap mechanically. The biggest challenge would be the shaft in the TT.

Electrically though this would be a nightmare if you didnt use standalone EFI.
