Randy--

Look in the phone book for a bearing supply place nearby. Take the cooler and the old o-rings with you.

Does anybody really use phone books anymore? Turns out that bearing supply places don't advertize in the consumre directories anymore. B-to-B book will have them though.

Is that the tranny cooler? Sure looks way different to my '88 S4.

That cooler is located within the passenger side end tank of the radiator - as shown in the previous photo by J.

Tanks.

See my response - no trip to the radiator store is planned.

Understood; PET doesn't show an exploded view of the rad to list the Orings. As Bob suggests taking the cooler w/Orings to a rad shop can possibly match the size.

If you have a decent auto parts store nearby, they sometimes sell loose o-rings.

Thanks, guys.

Success - but it's the 928 kind.

I did replace the side tank and have no radiator leaks now. The engine also runs about 10 degrees cooler now, having cleaned all the debris from between the cooling fins.

Much thanks to Mr. Howell for his detailed instructions. Without them I would not have attempted this repair on my own.

The original side tank had a metal deflector piece in the coolant inlet hose connector. This appears to be designed to direct hot coolant down the side tank and away from the tank seal to prolong seal life. I installed it in the new side tank which did not have this deflector.

However, while battling with that top transmission cooler line, it seems the swage fitting between the rubber hose and the hard line has been compromised, resulting in trans fluid squirting out from that joint at a goodly rate.

Looks like I'll now have to replace that line, dammit.

Are the 19mm fittings the ones that are leaking? If so see if you can tighten them up a little more. That may stop the leaking.

What size metric o-rings did you finally use? That might help someone sourcing them later.

Randy usually the trans cooler and the oil cooler lines are ready to be rebuilt when the tank fails.
You can do the lines by cutting off the swages and installing new hose then use a screw clamp

Interesting - my side tanks come with the main seal and two of the smaller seals.
Flat Rubber about 1mm thick - 25mm ID and 35mm OD.
Never used an O ring.
