Friends

I took a look at and drove the September 1987, 58,000 mile, 1988 Porsche 928 S4 5 speed manual today.

The all leather interior was like new for a car this old. No cracks, rips or tears anywhere. The burgundy color is very nice with the code 383 Sport Seats and 018 Steering Wheel.

The exterior was in great shape also. The left front fender may have had work because the color was a little off from the rest of the L908 Grand Prix White. The body panels all fit well. The current owner did a fair job of painting the rear spoiler white, another slight color mismatch.

This car is definitely a looker. The overall cosmetic condition is, well, unbelievable. The lighting conditions were not the best but very good.

With the timing belt issue, I was not able to put the car through the paces. Upon start up, the engine did not seem to rock but there was a undefined noise, like a knocking.

The shift linkage felt a little sloppy and the clutch grabbed about 3/4 of the way up. I was VERY careful shifting the car but I believe I detected a synchromesh issue.

I believe that I should take the next step and have a professional inspection. Not having a lift, eliminated a front suspension evaluation and other undercarriage items which they could complete.

The hood struts, remote trunk latch, trip odometer and the code 158 Blaupunkt radio are not functioning and there may have been some other items I missed that require attention.

All in all this seems to be a well preserved example of a grand touring luxury sports car.

I will keep you updated after next weeks inspection.

Thanks for all of your help.

With respect to the 1991 of this thread, I would appreciate a look at it by anyone who is close enough so as not to be out of their way to do so. I would obviously have a further inspection if I was advised that is was worth it.

Thanks

This one could be my first Porsche. I am fascinated by these 928's. I have been trying to educate myself as much as possible.

My question is about this particular car and if anyone knows anything about it and the dealer.

Thank you in advance for any information which you may be able to provide.
I just asked them for a service history. Let's see if they post it.

If they do post where will they do it?

They could give a recent service in the Q&A but they may reply via email. We'll wait and see.

I put in a bid but it's over my max to spend at the moment.

Anyway, they did say they have extensive records and will try to find the latest timing belt change and water pump service.

This is confusing re MY; suggest you get vin and run carfax.

With the timing belt issue, I was not able to put the car through the paces. Upon start up, the engine did not seem to rock but there was a undefined noise, like a knocking. And your conclusion re MM is? If more than an inch betw bottom of cross member and top of intake; I would plan on replacing MM?

Does the belt light come on consistently at 3000? Once would cause me to drive VERY conservatively. More than once is a considered gamble for whoever is owner.

It's always a question with minor items whether the owner left these b/c he was spending time on the big ones?? With the TB issue, I think this car needs serious attention and I would check belt tension before driving it anywhere.
Thanks for all of your help.

See above for nit picking. It sounds like you are getting emotionally involved and making exceptions for it. Not a fatal flaw as long as you know the financial ramifications of the issues. Happens all the time, just be sure you know what you are getting.

^^^^^^
That first bit is of no issue... that is common. By the time May rolls around the cars built from then on are the next MY. My '94 was built in late '93. I suspect most of the '88's were built in '87 actually... remember the "'87" record setting S4 (Kibort's old car) set that record in the summer of '86!!

Porsche's model year starts in July of the previous year, as I recall. A June build is the current year (eg. an '87 in '87), but a July or later build date is the next years model (therefore, an '87 build date is an 88 model year).

I have an exception to that rule, mine is the 14th to the last 86 built (2996) and the build date is July 1986.

Sorry it is a 1988. The build date is Sept. 87. I ran an Auto Check and it looks OK.

This car is definitely a looker. The overall cosmetic condition is, well, unbelievable. The lighting conditions were not the best but very good.

This is a confusing statement; the paint issues will be magnified in direct daylight.
The light condition was somewhat overcast. In that light the off color fender showed. I meant the rest of the body and especially the interior. I agree with you that another view in bright sunlight is in order. I hope to do that this week.

Not sure but I never saw it on at 2500 RPM. The owner is bringing the car into the shop to address the timing belt. I want to have a PPI at that time.

It's always a question with minor items whether the owner left these b/c he was spending time on the big ones?? With the TB issue, I think this car needs serious attention and I would check belt tension before driving it anywhere.
He has several vehicles in his stable. He said he has not used this one much. I believe he understands the belt issue. He will have it fixed before the sale.

See above for nit picking. It sounds like you are getting emotionally involved and making exceptions for it. Not a fatal flaw as long as you know the financial ramifications of the issues. Happens all the time, just be sure you know what you are getting.
You are so correct on the emotional and financial points. I like it very much except for the fender paint issue. The interior cannot be much better. With a PPI I hope that I can pin down the $$$$ amount and go on from there.

SteveG thanks for all of your help.

As a new one, I apologize for not starting another post about the 1988 Porsche.
