Default Front Exhaust Hanger?

Does your late S4 or GTS have an exhaust hanger just behind the cats, supported from above on the torque tube? In addition to those at the center and rear mufflers ...

PET seems to show this for GTS but my car does not have one. I am imagining the PO's douchebag mechanic tossed it when the TT was replaced several years back. Many parts on my car disappeared somewhere in the past ;-)

I see what you are talking about in the PET. My car, an 89, is very original, or was when I got it, and that hanger is not there and I haven't come across that hanger on other cars. The PET has no model year application note for these parts. News to me, but this would be just one of many times. Anybody else have one?

I recently busted one on an '85. I mention this as a precursor to whining about how miserable it is to replace. You have to remove the heat shields to get a new one in. I avoided that by cutting two hangers out of 1/4" neoprene and working those through the hole one-at-a-time.

Easy to see if you should have one. Is there a hook sticking down through the heat shields and maybe a hook on the exhaust?

both of mine have them 88, 86.5 and the 84 Euro had one.
Usually the part thats missing is on the pipes, if your look carefully there should be a hanger thats just above the heat shield. usually the heatshield bolts must be removed to move the shield enogh to install a new rubber hanger, then the top portion that fits over the pipes is put in the hanger then the lower portion is screwed into the top

So Stan, you're thinking items 6 and 7 in the PET illustration may still be present, but obscured by the heat shields? I do not believe 9, 10 or 11 are on my car any longer.

Part of the reason I asked was when I had the GTS in the shop recently, I asked them to replace that hanger and they said they all looked closely and were certain there was no such mounting point on a 928. So that's consistent with the upper part being hard to see behind the heat shields.

I still bet the guy who changed the TT didn't put 6 and 7 on the replacement TT, but will have to wait until next occasion to get on a lift to know for sure.

Thanks all, only this group could solve the mystery ...

Was looking for the same thing on my '89 because I saw it in PET but it isn't there.

From memory....I worked on the TT of an unmolested 91 - none of those parts were there. I worked on an 88 5-speed TT - not there. Another 90, same thing. I've seen the undersides of dozens of others on my lift. I either ignored it or it wasn't there. I can see how the lower pieces could be left off, but the part clamped onto the TT should still be there. Odd. I'll take another look at my TT.

the part on the TT is usually hard to see as its up above the heat shields and is dirty and obscured by the pipes.
That said , on a TT people usually take them off so they dont get cut while swapping out the bearings.
But if it was on there there should be a mark in the paint, look carefully

Right, but I expected I would find the parts clamped to the TT on the original TT when removed.

I just looked on my 89. There is only one opening in the heatshielding. So, that's where this hanger should be. I see a hose clamp on the TT, but no other parts. That hose clamp secures the AT vacuum line to the top of the TT. On all the other cars I've worked on that's all that was there. Could this be a Euro (non-cat) thing? I can see how w/o the rigidity of the cat structure, the long pipes might need extra support.

Bill my guess is that some of the cars didnt get these clamps, no rhyme or reason I have not seen any cars without the TT clamp in place .
There should be 3 screw type clamps on the TT holding fluid lines if you have an auto. as well as holding the vacuum line.
At this time you could refit a clamp around the TT and the lower portion but it would involve removing the O2 sensor wires and the pipes from the headers back and the center heat shield
