Default Cylinder Head Oil Plugs

Ok, this is my contribution to Rennlist. I had a lot of aggravation trying to find the steel 12mm plugs that are pressed in the cylinder heads to plug the oil galleys on 32v engines. Most people would call these "freeze plugs" but they are not, although that's exactly what they look like. I found a post or two in here from other people trying to find the part number for these plugs, but nobody answered the posts, so here we go:

The PET has two different parts listed for these plugs. Illustration 103-00 #'s 36 & 37. Below are pics of the two parts. #36 part# N 011 918 1 is the part # for the cupped 12mm steel plugs. The PET lists it as a "screw cover", but this must be a typo, because there aren't any screws there to cover. #37 part# 911 101 182 00 is an aluminum pellet that is too long and too big to press in the oil galley holes. I can only assume that some other P-Car uses this type of plug, because I haven't found one on my S4.

I also tried Napa for these 12mm plugs, but most engines use a deeper plug than the 928 which means they would not press and seat in the holes correctly. Which could mean instant loss of oil and oil pressure in the heads if they were to pop out going down the road. Needless to say, that would be bad.

I hope someone finds this post useful and maybe others won't have to go thru the same problems I've been thru to figure it out. Also, many thanks to Roger @ 928sRus for helping me sort thru this.

Since these are pressed in, do they ever leak? And how would you get them out, with a drift from the inside? Got any pics of the plugs on the engine?

There are 6 plugs in each 32v head. I can't take a pic right now, because I am waiting on the machine shop to get done with them. The plugs are pressed in and do not leak. They have to be drilled and tapped for a bolt, then pulled out of the heads from the outside. They are not made to be removed. The reason i removed and replaced mine is because I had an overheated block that had warped cylinders #1 & #5 enuff to let the piston skirts dig into the coating on the cylinder walls. I replaced the bottom end, block, pistons, but I used my old heads, which had enuff of the silica material in the oil galleys that I did not feel good about putting it together without making sure that all of that material was out of there. Most people would have no reason to remove these unless there is a major problem like mine. I felt like the hot tanking procedure would have still left some of that material in the corners of the oil pockets if I didn't remove the plugs. Just piece of mind I guess. When I get my heads back I'll take a couple pics to help illustrate.
