Default WTF does a folding rear wing do anyways?

This is probably a really stupid question, but what was the purpose of the folding wing of 87' as opposed to the fixed wing of the later cars? Enlighten me please!

Folds up so you can more easily wash the window and the under side of the wing... That is IT! That is also why they dropped it before the end of the '87 model year... They are pretty hard to find. I have one in my garage if anyone would like to buy it... Have not looked at it in awhile but it should still be in excellent condition...

Ahhh. Thank you for the enlightnement. I see why they did away with it. There is plenty of room to clean the glass with a fixed wing.... Mystery NO MORE!!!!

Besides what James said, I think it was to also be able to R&R the rear wiper arm and to access the lock (?) better.

If it had locking points along its arc of travel, I would then say it's to acheive a higher level of downforce... like a manual version of the computer-controlled rear spoilers on some 911s and Boxsters. Just a WAG on that one!

Yeah, I always supposed it had something to do with aerodynamics. Especially considering the adjusting wings of modern Porsches. No wonder someone hasn't removed the rear wiper and used the wires/mounting point to make a folding wing into a speed adjustable setup. It would certainly be unique....

Fixed it for ya' and agree totally! All you'd need would be a cam-profile lever attached to a panhard rod, and about 1" of travel. Modify the wiper motor or change to a short-travel unit with positive stops (non-repetitive motion) and the switch to be up/down only and you would have a winner.

Where's Sterling... why hasn't he tried this?

It's also a good way to scare the crap out of you. If you forget to lock it, at high speed, it will lock with a nice bang!

Not now he doesn't.

But he has gone through several 'What If' stages with his car... and probably isn't totally finished pushing the 928 envelope -yet.

The DFW group has an inside joke that Sterling will NEVER be finished pushing the envelope of the 928.

It ain't inside, or a joke, or just in DFW, that car will be finished when Sterling or the car is dead.

His car is a work in progress, it is just that he is light years ahead of most of us.
