Default Car rolling about 1 foot

I have an AT when I put the car in park and do not apply the hand brake the car will roll about 1 foot before it starts. What would cause this?

Do you mean before it stops?

Yes, it rolls about 1 foot before it catches and stops

Park is a transmission lock, right? If it's rolling that much, sounds like a transmission overhaul/replacement is in order. I don't know anything about the inside of the A/T, but if it's just the park gear, I'd say set the park brake and forget about it. Only problem would be if there is something rattling loose around in there from whatever broke on the park mechanism. Fortunately A/Ts are in the bulk of the cars, so there will be plenty of people here who won't be guessing (as I am)

Its normal for it to roll a ways, someone else did the math. But the pawl has 6 spots to catch on and if you just miss one it can roll a ways.

in this case it would be one sixth, or 60 degrees, of a wheel rotation. If you have 17" rims on the car, and maybe a total wheel diameter of 20" (including rim and tire), that would work out to about 10.5 inches, which is pretty close to your foot estimate. I guess I was wrong about it. Sweet deal.

easy fix.use that conveniently located hand brake, then build extra leg muscles when getting out of the car.

I had mine checked a few years ago because of the same situation and was told it's completely normal. Even in Park and the handbrake engaged, and on a very slight incline, it still will roll more than my other cars.

That is not a very strong looking pawl.
I think I will start using my parking brake also.

This is one area where my C4 vette has a advantage over the 928, the parking brake, you pull it up to set it and it drops back to the floor, it is in the same spot as the 928.

Mine (86.5) is about 4" at maximum travel (it is dependant on coming to rest position) Does feel longer than most modern cars but as long as it is engaging I see no problem.
