On my 1985 S car it's the #16 EZF Ignition Relay. I'm not sure if earlier cars used a computer for ignition or not. If they don't, it could also be the pickup on the distributor (or whatever tells the car to fire the coils).

So I know I've got to watch out for the green wire, but can anyone explain briefly what it does and where it is? I know it's infamous, and I should search the archives to learn about it, but I just searched them for plastic spoiler repair for another lister and my drive to sift through old posts has been depleted at the moment ....Thanks!

If your green wire is toast it will start briefly using the cold star inj, then die. You can measure the wire for opens or shorts, it provides a reference signal for the computer. Check your relay and your 14 pin connector near the front battery post for corrosion also.

Euro no green wire - US car green wire.
Is there a fuel pressure gauge installed? If not, how do you know it's getting fuel?
Are the injectors firing (US car)? If you say yes, how do you know?
Have you tested for spark?
Other than the fuel pressure gauge, you can test spark and injectors (L-jet US car) with under $25 worth of tools from Harbor Freight.

just solved almost an identical problem on my '81, although mine would run for about 10 minutes then die...eventually would start up again. Green wire was only a couple of years old, but it was the Bosch connector to the green wire (passenger side) that was the issue, almost no connection. Strip back the insulation and repair, I used shrink-on and tape as the wires seemed a bit thin to solder.
