5th has to be something different than Panamera coupe. Either smaller than Boxster Toyota MR2/MR Spyder style car which uses VW 4 cylinder turbo engine or smaller than Cayenne SUV based on VW/Audi platform.

In long term Porsche will start to use many same subcomponents with Lamborghini and Bentley like same brakes ect parts under the skin. As much as possible will also be used in large VW's and Audis. Thats best way to keep all three makes profitable.

Personally I would choose the Panamera over the others for the following reasons:

- Mercedes for the sporty characteristics,
- over the BMW for better styling and performance,
- over the Bentley's and Phaeton simply because they don't interest me.

The Aston's a different story, that is a beautiful car which offers up everything the Panamera does. The only thing that might prevent me from choosing the Aston is the reliability, Porsche is more than likely going to be a better day to day reliable driver.

Would it replace the 928.....not in a million years. But it wasn't designed to.

Either way, I'm not in the market for a high end daily driver

Rumors have it that the next gen Cayenne will be smaller than the current model.

It will also be much more "sporty" looking.

Knowing Porsche, this is how they would style the 2 door version.

Panamaera coupe looks very similar to the current 911 but the engines in the front.....ironic if this happened and the car performed better than the 911.

How about non VW group offerings? This is where the competition is light years ahead in the looks department

6. 2011 Mercedes CLS (even the first generation CLS is a striking auto)

7. BMW M5

8. Aston Martin Rapide - really, who in their right mind would buy a Panamera over this?

First impressions matter, and second, third, forth, and so on. First impression, its ugly as hell. I just can't get around it.

I don't know too many car enthusiasts that buy cars that they don't think are good looking. And this car is designed for enthusiasts.

I'm not sure it does anything that the above mentioned cars can't do, or do nearly as well, and they look good at a minimum, if not great.

Perhaps the fact that its a Porsche and has oddball styling will make it desirable to people.

I hope so. I'd like it to be a success.

On the other hand, I'm not likely to be able to afford one any time soon, so what difference does it make to me.

On the other hand, I may be able to afford one sometime soon, and in that case, I wouldn't even consider it.

There's no way you can deny its oddball.

my friend that hates the looks of my 88 S4, actually likes the looks of the Panamera.

They wouldn't develop a car that they wouldn't think would sell, especially not with today's market research technology.

Panamera was inherited in the Porsche acquisition and contributes zero to VW's volume ambitions. Hate to say it, but a warmed-over 4 cyl Volkswagen is the next big thing from Porsche. Picture an EOS with Porsche badges and +35 HP for $35K ... that's where this is headed.

They milk the Porsche name to sell a bunch of re-badged VW designs, that's how they grow volume. Otherwise Porsche is just a boutique not worthy of any more investment ...
