5-speed GTS transmission cooling line routing/details
This is mostly for posterity, but I spent 4 hours with the pressure washer yesterday and this car is still a dirty, corroded, freaking mess. Yuck. I may pull the freaking transmission/rear end just to clean it. How/where best to disconnect the lines from the tranny to drop it?
Anyway, with the engine and exhaust off, these become visible:
Send (?) line out of box, top right rear:
Forward along top right of trans:
Return (?) line at front of trans case:
Lines with loop, ziptied to TT:
Underbody routing:
Up from underneath in engine compartment:
Moving forwards:
Data point for Erkka:

Good eye, Aryan- Honestly, I'm not sure. This car had a roll bar in it at one point, though the mounting holes for it are outboard of where those plugs are. I need to pull the seats out (gonna rip out about 60 lbs of stereo amplifiers/wiring/crossovers/caps/crap) and see what those holes are on the inside.

I have nothing else to add Rob other than yes, pull that transaxle out and clean up!

Rob,
I know youve done this before, if you need help let me know. I need to get comfortable with this job. I may do it on the 85 and i will be doing a conversion on an auto GTS so if you need a hand, let me know.
Did you know that the car had a roll bar before purchase?

Rob, I can also come down and help. Doing trans work is much safer in numbers. I have done a bunch of 44 transaxles.

Ryan-
Nope, but it's no big deal. I did no PPI, and even if I had (and they'd found these), they wouldn't have been a deal breaker. Between the roll bar holes, the receipts for corner-balancing, the adjustable Koni reds/Eibachs, the Ott droplinks, the extra box of racing brake pads and the stress cracks around the holes in the drilled rotors, it is pretty apparent that this car was driven exactly the way it should be driven.
I'll let you know if i get a chance to drop the tranny, it may be labor day weekend but that depends on my bachelor status.

Michael-
I'll keep you posted as well- Since the engine and exhaust are out, I'm sort of cheating. It's really pretty easy on a 928 - Pull the rear brakes, disconnect the parking brake cable and axles, hang the tranny from the sway bar, and undo 6 shock tower bolts, 6 control arm/body mount bolts and 4 crossmember bolts and yer done. The entire rear assembly balances nicely on a floor jack (below) and can be moved around by 1 person. I put it back together by myself.

Awesome pictures, thanks Rob.
With the engine/clutch out, presumably all thats holding the torque tube in place is the bolts on the transmission end, so it comes down at the same time?
I've had the gasket set, LSD, mounts and TT bearings sitting on the shelf for far too long - hoping to have the '87 back on the road tomorrow with all its horses back after the intake job; then its onto the '89 for suspension, transmission, torque tube and brakes so it'll be ready for some track time.

Hilton-
Yep, the two are still bolted together (six bolts, as was recently discussed, see below) Right now the transmission is just sitting on the rear crossmember (removed the two tranny mount bolts to slide the bellhousing/TT/tranny back during engine removal) and the little black steel crossbrace near the front of the TT. I will pull the bellhousing off, drop the TT and the tranny together and just slide them out of the car as a unit- no real point in separating the TT from the transmission, I'd hate to break the input shaft, and if the shift coupler is ok, no point in potentially stripping the hex screw on the rear coupler (BTDT) or messing up the alignment there (also BTDT- the shifter in my GT still isn't quite right since I R&R'ed the TT 18 months ago....)

The car underbody looks pretty clean in the pictures. The motor mounts look like originals now is a good time to swap them out, of course the rack has to be dropped and then make sure the new mount studs dont hit the top of the rack, if you cut the studs off close to flush with nuts then you wont have any problems, dont forget add the 2 thick fender washers about 4mm total to each side if you use the Anchor mounts
