Default Cost to repair? Opinions wanted.

Hi all,

Found an EvilBay listing for a damaged 928. (see http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1983-porsche-928-S-damaged-coupe-v8_W0QQitemZ160354818515QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Cars?hash=item2555e459d3&_ trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Owner claims to have two quotes for repair - $AUD2800, and $AUD3300. I think he is dreaming if he imagines he can get THIS fixed for that price. What do you think?

Its an 84 Euro S with the 310 hp motor, but its an automatic, and that was quite a smack.

Any 928 repair that includes paint is going to have a very wide price range depending on the quality of the paint job and how extensive it needs to be.

I would want to see an independent inspection from a known good shop. Each of those fenders new is like $1700 so they must be talking about used parts.

I did not know there are drug addicts in Australia... But whatever he and the people who gave him the estimates are smoking, they are far from any reality.

In my opinion, this is a parts car, as fixing it would cost more than it'll ever be worth. Unless, of course, the value of 928s is much higher in AUS than in the US.

My best guess is that fixing this can easily go into 5-digit territory.

Steve - that won't buff right out. That is at lest 3x those estimates here in the states. Might be a good price for used parts only, no labor.

Nicole, 928s are MUCH more expensive in Oz - try three times the US prices.

I see cars advertised for $15K in the US, while an equivalent vehicle would be $45K to $50K or more here. This is the main reason my two are LHD.

Pay no attention to advertised prices, few sell remotely close to the sellers dream price.

Why not import a nice cheap car from Japan?

I think the low bids are baloney, but until its taken apart a bit the extent of the damage can't be seen. Just painting the front could be anyplace from $200 to $10,000 depending on the quality and prep work.

Could probably be fixed but not for $5k even in the US! I bet it would be $7k before you even BLINKED here!

New front bumper cover
New lights all across the front
New headlight raising motor plus all of the things that go with that
New fenders
New front spoiler
Radiator(s)?
Paint...

Just those things are like $4k+ before any of the actual WORK is done to put them on!

I voted only with stolen parts and free labor - I'd bet the cost of beer alone during the project would be well over the $3,000!

If you are willing and able to buy used panels for replacements and prep/paint and install them youself (or even just install them yourself, you *might* get away with that price. That said, there is a lot of damage to the front of the car, and if the frame is bent up, then there's no way that price is reasonable. Euro motor is win though, so if the price is right, its probably worthwhile as a parts car, as mentioned above.

This would be a great candidate for a body kit like strosek though, since you'd have to pull all the old stuff off anyway. IDK if you're into that sort of thing, but as long as it runs okay, I think it would be a viable option that way.

Not anywhere in these parts of the colonies mate!
I'd hazard a guess that even for a half-decent job, you'd wind up north of Nichole's estimate. I had a small dent quoted by someone I trust, and depending on the paint reso, that alone was $500 to $1,500.......

without paint job, maybe you can fix it with 3K, thats if the frame is not damaged, Im sure Mason can help you out on a good deal for parts.

If that's the case, it might be worth fixing this one.

What do you think it'll be worth fixed? About $AUS 20k or more?

That would make it feasible in Australia.

In the US, it would not make sense.
