Default Electrical Problem. Windows, door locks and sunroof suddenly quit

I searched and couldn't find anything other than Relay relay relay. My 1984 model has recently developed a problem. The windows and the sunroof all stopped working at the same time. I checked the fuses and replaced the window relay but no joy. I was able to get the sunroof to work albeit weakly by taking the switch apart and cleaning it. The windows still wont work. I have recently cleaned the ground point under the steering wheel and also the one above the fuse panel but it didn't make a difference. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe get new switches but these things are expensive. One of the window switches is only a year old and is the new micrswitch style. The others are the ball and spring type. The electric door locks don't work either.

Though it could be an ignition switch problem - that would also affect may other items.

BTW the newer switches are not designed to be used on older cars - they are not capable of switching the high current to the motors reliably so wear out much faster than the new ones in dircet motor drive cars. The old switches can be used on the newer cars though they typically do not click like the new ones.

So sounds most like the switches - they can be repaired by cleaning - at least for a while. OR it could be the console warping and making it difficult for the switch plates to move all the way to the switched positions. If they woek much better when you take them out of the console - thats why.

Thanks for the help so far.

They do not work in or out of the console. One thing I forgot to mention in the first post, the electric door locks no longer work either.

I just looked up the electrical portion of the ignition switch. I was surprised that it was only $59. Is this a difficult part to replace?

Curious, do you have any power on D1 with ignition switch on?

Ignition switch replacement pretty muchrequires pod removal. I usually take out the drivers seat and lay on my back to access underneath and behind the ignition switch. Fairly easy replacement.

Whats D1?

Update: I checked the ignition switch. The electrical part was partially seperated from the metal portion of the ignition assembly. I plugged it back in and now the windows work 100%. I still cannot get the door locks to work. I cheched the two .4 A fuses at the back of the fues panel. One ohmed out a little weird although it looked fine. I'm going to replace these fuses and try again.

I could only find .5 A fuses. Are these OK to use?

I have used the Radio Shack .5 fuses with no problems.

I installed the new fuses and the door locks still don't work. Does anyone have any ideas?

What model car is this on?

Did they ever work for you in the past?

Are you using the key in the door or button on dash...or both?

It is a US 1984 model.

Yes, they worked fine until recently.

I have been trying the doors, I'll go try the button on the dash and see if that works.

I'm suggestion this in total and complete ignorance, because all I know is that these bastards can screw up many electrical systems if not functioning correctly....

Do your interior lights ALL work? If not, fix and/or replace.

Also, what was the last thing you did on the car before the e-problems?

I didn't do anything before the e-failure.

The interior lights work, the door sill lights do not but they never have and the locks worked properly. I currently have the door panels out to do some other work, is there anything related to the door light near the kickpanel that could cause this? All the other inoperative stuff started working when I plugged the ign. switch back in. The locks are the only thing left.
