Sunday, driving out of Carmel Valley, 4 Panamera's passed me going the other way. Headed to a soiree at Bernardus Vineyards. I was not invited. (sniff).
They are not as ugly in person as in photo's, but that backend is still mighty BIG.! Two were the blah goldish color, one was silver and one was black- the black one was pretty nice. They have a "mascera" line of leds under the headlights, so from a distance approaching the front, it looks like an Audi.
They are also larger than you expect from seeing the photos. Sorry I don't have any pics to share- I'll try and take some later in the week.
This is a fun week to be in Monterey, if you like cars!

Subjective, of course....I also got to fondle a Maserati Quatroporte in person. Also a much bigger car than I expected from photos, but a beautiful car. It dwarfed a Bentley GT sitting next to it..I am not Maser fan, but if I had an extra 150k laying around, I'd have to say I'd pick the Maserati...the interior is stunning- no Teutonic starkness in this thing- it lived up to the legend of hand-stitched leather and suede.
I haven't seen the Panamera inside yet...might change my mind?

Yeah, I'm not sure why everyone's decided that we all want station wagons again. :P Call it a 3 door or a 5 door or whatever, I'm not a fan. They should have tapered it back like a 928.

Here is a pic to get some scale. It is big, and that much more impressive that it only weighs 3,900 lbs. Even though it was a passenger seat impression, I can tell you the car has an amazingly nimble feel. Lots of room and nicely appointed, more in a 928 kind of way.
I was told that the rear hatch is a result of one of the two mandates that drove the design: on top of the performance/driving experience, the car had to have not only room for 4 adults comfortably but also luggage for 4. The only way they could meet that second requirement and maintain the other objectives was a hatch design.
After the ride, I truly appreciate what Porsche accomplished with the Panamera. Looking at it through that lens, the looks have "grown" on me (groan replaced by grown, lol!)

When you put both cars head to head. William's GTS makes the Panamera look really BAD. I don't like it at all. It looks like a 4 door 911. Once again, our sharks prove that they have timeless styling!!

All they had to do was add 10-15cm of rear overhang to make it into a proper 4 door sedan.
Must kill handling to add a little weight out back past the rear axle.
Oh wait. Weight behind the rear axle is bad?
I understand the need to keep a flattish roof so rear headroom is not compromised.
Last time I saw a 5 door was a Mazda 626 from ages ago.
So would a Pananaramalama actually make a GTR look svelte.
And yes dear, that rear end does make your butt look fat.

Well, NO ONE can argue any longer that the 928 is big, fat and heavy.
