Ok I'm buying Tom's door panels. They are the newer style with the separate mid and tweeter. I understand that most people run MB Quart 210's my question is why? Are they the only ones that fit or are they the best? I personally like Infinity so I'm not familiar with the MB's. Anyone know of an Infinity separate that will work?

Several years ago I put the 4 inch Infinity Kappa componet set in my doors and rear bolsters on a 90 GT. I don't know if the 4 inch component set is even still available. I also put JL Audio 6 in subs in the 6 in side holes with a 1/2 inch tall trim ring. It sounded great

I just ordered a 5 1/4" component set from Infinity - once they get here I'll see what needs to be done to make them fit. My doorcards are pretty dodgy anyway, so I plan to build some new ones out of fiberglass, and cut the holes to fit - it doesn't look like clearance behind will be an issue.
If I remember, I'll take some pictures of the before and after.

Pictured below is one way to get 5 1/4" to fit up front without playing with fiberglass... MDF routed out and covered with vinyl.
Eventually, I will use fiberglass to install 6.5's below. I'm not satisfied with the current low midrange/midbass up front. Hopefully completing the three-way and add sound mats will do the trick.

Kurt those look great. The reason I'm changing my door panels is to go back to the stock look. The 81's did not have the seperates just the 4x6 behind the door panel. The speakers were shot when I got the car so I cut them out and put 5 1/4's in. They sound great I just want the stock look. My base is in the back so all I really need from the fronts is mids and highs anyways.

I got pioneer 4" which fit and sound great. I replaced the 2" speaker with a ABS plastic cutout made by TAP Plastics locally and installed a Sony tweater. Also made a similar ring for the 4" so I could use the original grills. Total cost for the plastic fab was a whopping $13.

In addition to what others have written (e.g. they fit, they sound good, etc.) the MBQs feature a restrained stock-like look. As far as I know, every other kind of 4" speaker that you can buy new that also fits well in the door panel looks like it was designed by a dropout who's only design tool is a large crayon and who's taste runs to Anime, 22" tail pipes, and spinner wheels.
This was the case about 18 months ago. Stereo component cycles are so fast that that may have changed twice already since I last looked.

MB Quart used to be a premium brand, but the name has been bought and sold 3 or 4 times in the last decades, with I suspect little remaining of the original company.
If you use a powered subwoofer and high pass (filter out the bass) the rest of the speakers most anything should have adequate sound and play pretty loud.

For low prices on mb quart (and infinity, et al) speakers check out the website at dealercostcaraudio.com (no affiliation) they also have killer prices on pioneer and alpine in-dash navigation units, etc.
