I've been lurking in this forum for a few weeks now, got the 928 bug and now own a 1990 928 S4.
It's all your fault!
I bought the car last week in Knoxville and drove it Wednesday back home to north Mississippi. I must be the only 928 owner in Marshall county...
The car has a few mechanical issues but I think I can handle them or I'm just too stupid to worry. Probably the latter.
It needs shocks, the front end height brought up just a bit, there is a noise at cruise that really sounds like tires; the tires are 8 years old and I plan to replace them very soon.
I do have one thing that's come up and that's the surging idle issue you see here quite often. I see a reference to the WD40 treatment and wonder exactly what you are talking about? Can someone provide some detail and I'll give it a shot.
Again, this is all your fault... Wish I could make it to Dallas this weekend but that won't happen.

Daniel congrats on the purchase and welcome to the tank!
I'm sure someone will chime in with a response to your WD40 question.

Welcome and congrats!
The 'WD40 treatment' is just opening up the hose that leads into your ISV and spraying some WD40 in there to free it up. I think WallyP posted that he'd done that once years ago on a car and it hasn't been sticking since.
Also, I had a surging idle problem that was solved by a new O2 sensor (and plug). Idle issues often mean vacuum issues. Makes sure you've got good rubber and seals, maybe do the whole top end refresh deal, you'll get to know your car better that way too. (Don't forget fuel lines, check T belt, flex plate if it's an auto...) You know the drill.

Welcome to the forum.
I think the WD40 reference is related to using the spray to clean the ISV, Idle Stabilizer Valve. I think its buried under the intake of the S4, so I would replace it with new.

The WD-40 is done with the intake and idle stabilizer in place ! On the passenger cam cover there are two breather hoses these are plumbed to the intake below the mass air sensor but above the idlerstabilizer. So with the engine running you pull one hose loose and shoot in a few good sprays of WD-40 while the motor continues to run. It may clear it up if not then the whole intake manifold needs to come off and then you have about $1,000 of parts which really should be replaced while you are in there......

Well, I tried the WD40 to no avail. When cold the engine idles fine, after it warms up the idle oscillates to the point of stalling sometime. If I use on the accelerator to hold rpm at 800 the oscillations stop.

Sounds like the throttle position switch isn't detecting idle.
With the engine off, if you move the throttle cable slightly, do you hear a click from just under that side of the intake? if not, try adjusting the cable. If you do, the sensor may need replacing - you can test by using a multimeter on pins 5 (ground) and 2 on the LH connector in the passenger footwell (easier than removing the intake). It should be closed circuit when throttle is released, and go infinite-ohms as soon as throttle is applied.
The other possible cause of the surging idle is a bad Temp II sender - also reachable without removing the intake - a search for "under the hood" should bring up pictures of where it is, and test using an ohm-meter between ground and each pin to make sure neither side of it is open circuit.
If the throttle sensor is faulty, then you'll need to go in there and replace or repair it - in which case you'll need this good write-up on the intake manifold refresh (and the aforementioned $1k worth of parts), see:

Beautiful car! What color is the exterior and interior. Looks like Marine Blue / Dark Blue over Cashmere. Very nice contrast. Congratulations.
