Drives fine, but wont idle..
Today after I left school, I turned the car on and sat for 30 seconds or so, long enough to adjust the windows and sunroof. I had the A/C off and took off. Came to a stop making a left and put in the clutch only to have it die. So I started it up and drove off noticing that when I let off the gas there was more engine braking than normal. I put in the clutch again while driving at speed and it drops to zero, I try this a few more times and try it with and without the clutch engaged and it makes no difference. Then it just starts idling about 3 minutes later. I got it home with no issues, I wasnt far. Now it sits in the garage with me wondering what that could have been???

When the ISV's go, what is the fail mech? I cleaned mine up real well and tested it with 12V before I put my motor together but now mine only idles sometimes, otherwise it surges and almost dies or dies completely.

check also the throttle position switch, make sure its clicking off the idle stop as well as when the cable is released then check it electrically

The idle stabilizer can get dirty cruded up and stick (wd 40 can help) or since it is an electric motor device the brushes can get worn and not be strong enough to open close quickly enough. The LH brain opens closes it multiple times per second to hold a steady idle and keep it from tripping dropping RPM too fast on deceleration and stalling. As it heats up the clearances may change and it act OK or NOT !

I have to bring this back from the dead since I am about to have to deal with it again. This problem after another 20 miles of driving wasn't just at idle, it also effected normal driving intermitantly. Could that still be the ISV? As in one second it is smooth and the next it is running very rough when driving, but with some extra throttle it maintains its speed. Seemed like if I played with the throttle it would change between the two randomly. Sometimes it would idle, most often immediately after I restart it from a stall and sometimes it would drive clean for a second or so after a roll start it if I was already driving. Any more thoughts?

replace the ISV and also check the throttle position switch for closed position and WOT.
My guess is that the ISV has worn brushes and the motor is staying stuck in a position . This will affect idle

Also make sure you throttle cable is not too tight. If too tight, will not seat on the idle switch. You should here the "click" of the idle switch when throttle is released by hand.
Doing what Merlin suggests will rule that out as well.

Does an '82 have an ISV? Mine idles stable, but I feel a constant rumbling through the driveline, even in park or neutral, but smooths out with slight throttle.
