Default 4000rpm problem

Hi Guys, I'm new to here so you will see a lot of me.

I just picked my '87 S4 up last week to discover it has a problem. When the car tries to go over 4000rpm the power dies until the pedal is released and re applied. the car will not go over 4k rpm.

Anyone seen this before?
Cheers roland.

1st of all welcome, I'm sorry your 1st post is for that of a problem with your car. You'll find a great deal of knowledge here.

That said, I had a similar problem when my LH computer failed....

stick your head under the car and see if the cats are glowing, better done at night.
If so then stop driving the car till the problem is found, usually a computer or ignition

4K RPM? Could also just be the flappy valve sticking. I'd be worried about fires too, but it could be somewhat simpler.

First, make absolutely certain that the engine is running smoothly on all cylinders. As Mrmerlin says, glowing cats are a problem!

One possibility for your problem would be plugged (usually melted) cats causing high exhaust back pressure.
