Default My LH Brain saga,Thanks Rich Andrade

Recently my 87 S4 auto started having some issues. A stumble at idle, lagging performance and the strangest symptom was running the car up to 4000 rpm in top gear the car would no longer accelerate past this point, and would only creep up in revs even with the pedal floored. Almost Like hitting a rev limiter but not quite the same.

The car would rev freely, but not smoothly, when the transmission was in neutral but not in gear...

Strange, I just had a major service done, T-belt/H2o pump, intake removed, new Vac lines, trans service, etc., etc.

My first concern was the transmission, as when the car did shift, the engine would stumble plus the engine revs freely when not in gear. Turns out I had a vacuum leak at the transmission, Also my bowden/trans cable was a bit loose. Easy fixes.

BUT my original issues, persisted. So I did some searches and came upon Rich Andrade's website www.electronikrepair.com among others.

I was having some of the symptoms associated with a failing LH brain. With the exception that his site mentions that the car will not rev past 3000 rpm.

I had a LH brain fail completely years ago on an previous S4 I owned and my records indicated that the brain in my current car was probably still original.

What the hell, I said, Contacted Rich and he said to send it to him to check it out.

Well it's back in the car and the car is running and like new!! I honestly haven't driven a 928 this smooth and strong for a long long time. THis is my 3rd 928 and I've driven over a dozen, in the past.

I have to give Kudos to Rich for a job well done, and if any one has some strange symptoms, It might be worth contacting him, He is very helpful and knowledgeable.

Thanks Rich!

Thanks - I'm glad to hear your 928 is running like it should! I'm doing my best to keep 928s on the road. The most difficult cases to diagnose are those where performance sloooooowly gets worse ... the owner has a hard time understanding what is happening. These LHs fail in many different ways, in reality the best is a no-start failure, that is pretty easy to diagnose.

I've created a pretty detailed overview of the 928 S4 and newer spark & fuel system for diagnosis in PDF form - anyone who is interested drop me a note at info@electronikrepair.com and I'll email it out.
