Brake pads

Thanks Borland. I did see the damping plates in the WSM, but the Akebono pads I recently installed on my SAAB came with metal tabs that fit into the pistons along with shims...not requiring a separate ordered piece. Having never installed pads on the 928, I would have imagined they too would have come with the necessary hardware as that has been my experience.
After reading some of the threads related to installing brake pads, here and elsewhere, I did not come across a mention of these pads...although, I'm sure it's buried here somewhere.
Thanks again.

I posted a thread on how to install PBRs with a little champher of the backing plate some anti-seize (no dampers) followed by a bed in process.
If you cant find it on search I can re-post...............BTW outcome works very well.

What I've been doing since I've owned my car and changed out the pads a few times is just reuse the damping plates (dampners?). I put them back in the piston bores on the calipers and slide the new pads back in. I think the dampners still do their job this way. I've had no problems with noise or squeaking.
Just take a putty knife (or similar) and scrape the dampners off the back of the old pads, clean them up with brake cleaner and plop them in the caliper piston bores, slide the pads in and you're done.

Thank you Malcolm, but couldn't find it using "brake pads" under your posts. Perhaps something different in your title?
These dampeners are all over the place in sizes (30, 36, 44 mm, etc.). I tried measuring with a caliper, but unsure exactly what points to reference when trying to get an accurate reading. If I measure the visible/outside part of each piston (dust boot) I get about 39.33mm.
Anyone got clues as to which size I need. Some of the part no.'s are:
964 351 096 01
964 352 096 00
965 351 096 00
and so on...
I've only gotten to the rears so far. I'm guessing the fronts are different. Also, there are 4 pistons on the rear calipers. How about the fronts; same?
Before realizing my pads did not come with these components, I bought some spray-on dampening stuff made by CRC as some people recommend it as an added measure to help prevent noise. I'm wondering if most people install aftermarket pads without these dampeners in favor of something like this product by CRC instead.

I see Rick...thanks. If I can't get a fix on the sizes I need to order I may do that. The WSM is not clear on which part numbers go to what...at least the way I try to interpret it.

Roger, I believe that the pads I bought from you were Hawk dustless, intending to resolve a terible brake squeal. . I installed the anti-squeal discs behind the pads. Right away the egregious squealing that prompted the pad change was no better, but over a few hundred miles the squealing subsided and now for almost a year, I never hear any at all.

I run pagid blues on the race car - NEVER had a problem with brake fad.
Cant comment on how loud they are - I cant hear anything else but the motor/exhaust.

+1 on Yellow Stuff. I don't have them on my 928 (yet), but run them on my 951 with new crossdrilled and slotted Zimmermans and have been extremely happy with results in spirited daily driving. Not the cheapest, but great all around IMHO.

There are 4 different sizes for the front and rear calipers but if you follow my post they're NLR.

Thank you Malcolm for digging that up. I tackled the job yesterday while I still had some good sunny weather...rain was headed my way. I've got the rears done, with the fronts planned for tomorrow...it rained today. I managed to get the old dampeners off, clean them up, and applied that tacky brake-silence spray-on stuff to the side that adheres to the pads. I also coated the back plates of the brake pads with the same material. The pads and dampeners are now bonded with that tacky adhesive and seem to be a solid hold ... at least equivalent to the bond on the original pads & dampeners.
The new pads & rotors are a VERY tight fit. I'm also bleeding the brake lines as they have not been done in a while. I was not aware until just recently that the fluid had to be changed every 2 yrs or so. I've had the car for 5 years and who knows how long since the original owner had it changed. The fluid that came out of the rear/passenger was the color of rootbeer.
All clear back there now with the new synthetic Castrol fluid I used. I'm praying that with all this attention to the brakes (fluid, pad choice, spray-on brake-silencer, re-using good dampeners, etc) that I will be rewarded with a nice braking system that is as quite as it is reliable (fingers crossed).
Thanks again Malcolm (and others) for your efforts in helping me. I will be sure to report back (hopefully tomorrow night) with my results as my fronts are going on tomorrow. Now if I could only find a better way to fish those pad sensors out without flaking the material off.........
