Default filling auto trans after fluid flush and filter change, tips and tricks?

Im going to pull the pan, replace the gasket and filter and drain the torque converter but there is one thing im not so sure about with the auto trans fluid flushing.

That is the quickest and easiest way to refill the reservoir, all 8-9-10 quarts of it from under the car?

I had noticed that the reservoir can tilt upwards but im wondering from those that have done this, what the best way of refilling is. Are you able to put 4-5 quarts into the thing before you start the car to get the pump running again? Am i best getting a gallon jug and using a type of hand pump and hose to pump it into the reservoir?

Just trying to make sense of this part of the procedure without making too much of a mess.

Suggestions?

I've tried them all and never have escaped the mess!

The last time I used a new cheep garden type sprayer with just a hose attached and pumped slowing filling that way.

You will have to start the car several times to fill up the TC and get the fluid to the correct level.

AND whatever you do don't leave the breaker bar on the crank bolt when you go to start the engine for the 1st time to start your filling. I did this
with not so good results. (I was using the breaker bar to center the drain in the TC to drain the fluid)

Ryan, I filled up the reservoir to the top using a small hand pump purchased at pep boys. (the pump actually fit inside my amzoil trans fluid bottle.) VERY handy. Then started the car and let it idle. While idling I kept pumping fluid in until I could see it on the reservoir marker. I don't recall how much it took. Its still messy, but isn't all that hard with the pump.

Ben, do you recall how much you got into the thing before you started it up the first time?

i have to imagine its enough that you dont risk running it dry or anything.

IIRC you can get that same little hand pump at Wal Mart too.

I tried it also with mixed results.

Also Wal Mart sells a funnel with a twist spout that closes the flow. I taped it to a ladder standing at the rear wheel, higher than the tranny , ran a clear plastic hose down to the tranny and would fill, shut off the funnel, start the car and repeat.

did you do this with the right rear wheel off ?

Or i guess with a funnel and hose you wouldnt really need to would you? I like this idea.

I did the ladder trick it will fill to a point letting you start the car with fluid in it.
Ran it over the top of the back tire with a hose and a funnel, have fun and use a lot of paper towels.

Ryan,
I found the correct coupler to connect to the factory fill port on the auto trans along with a pump that will screw right into the trans fluid bottle. It is a no mess operation. I've had this for a long time and was planning on introducing it as a new offering from MURF 928, just haven't got around to it yet. I would be happy to send it to you for you to try it out for yourself and you can let us all know what you think of it.
Send me a PM with your address and I will send it to you.

I have done it with the wheel off and on. Just route the hose around/over thru the wheel well into the fill hole. I think I used a little tape to help hold it there.

Just take it slow

To answer your question, the first go I get about 3 quarts in and then about a quart at a time between starting it and cycling it through the gears. I did mine a couple weeks ago. I used a hand pump; although my pump doesn't fit the top of the AT fluid container. So, I dump a quart at a time into a mason jar and pump it in. I think the trick is having enough elivation so you can move around under the car. I drive it up on ramps and jack up the rear end and put wooden blocks under the rear tires so it's the same height as the front. / Bruce

Ryan,
Take off the rear wheel so you can see - place a trouble light behind reservoir so as to create a shadow..
Take a piece of 3/8 rubber fuel line, place one end in the reservoir, and one end in the bottom of a gallon of transmission fluid...
Cup your hand over the transmission fluid bottle snout and hose, and blow compressed air into said bottle - start car, and fill as needed...
Your hand works to regulate pressure and flow, and the fluid is pushed into the reservoir as needed - no mess to clean, easy, and no fuss!

Ryan,

I know this is no help now, but you need a lift. You work on these cars way too much to not have one.

I have used a standard fluid pump before and not spilled a drop, but I was under a lift.

On your back and under ramps or the like and it is hard not to make a mess.

Tim, where is the factory fill port located at?
Got a picture of the coupler tool?

Thanks
