Think yourself lucky its not a moden remote type key with immobolizer stuff in it - these commonly cost $300+ as blanks! At least here in Oz. My second 928 key was obtained through dealer via VIN and key number from the onwers manual for ~$60.

I am very happy with my keys from http://keys4classics.com. Just had to send them some pics of my only key.

+1 on the "keys4classics"
I'm totally impressed with the service, turn around and quality from these folks!

Had a lot of crap from local Porsche dealers.....big bucks..no warranty....your problem..etc.
Couple of clear digital photos, and I've got two back-ups now at a really reasonable price. They were also able to replicate keys for my classic bike with no issues (1974).
Highly recommended.!!!

Just recieved 2 86 928 keys last week from Keys4classics.com. They worked great and were less than half the price I paid last year for an extra key for my 81, cut from the VIN at a Dallas Porsche dealer. Took just about a week.
Best of luck.

Ditto
I sent a dig photo to the guys in Australia, and the two keys they made work beautifully. As I recall, their process figures out how the key was originally made and thereby compensates for the wear present in the photograph. I actually put away the key that I got with the car and have been using one of the new ones because feels better in the locks.
Fast service, very reasonable price and worked perfectly .. I was impressed.

Keys4classics DO offer the option of Huf (Porsche OEM) blanks to fit into a customer supplied (lighted) key head - it DOES cost extra compared to the standard (Silca?) brand blanks.
I am in the process of getting additional keys from them for my '89 at the moment - I had no luck locating anybody that could cut a 928 key in my hometown.

I wish I had know about them two months ago when I lost one of my keys. I'm currently living in Australia, and had my brother in the states get me one from the dealers. $135.00 including lighted head. Fortunately, it appears my 87 was never re-keyed.

+2 & +3 for Tony's work.
Got a hatch lock assembly, with no key. Sent to Tony, and was back inna week. Sent the bill with the work! Good Man! Also met at the Stoddard's meet in Cleveland a few years ago, where he cut three 928 keys on the spot.

The lighted key fob can be purchased as a separate option, so that doesn't necessarily mean that the keys aren't the original. It may be that the PO had a key made and that was the fob that he chose. That said, it seems like there are a couple foolproof options, so you'd probably be better off going with them.

That is exactly what I have done.. I emailed pics of the original key ID card and several pics of my only worn key and they arrived from Australia in about 10 days...what was it ?? 60-80 bucks and they are perfect copies !! They are not Porsche blanks, just the aftrermarket things... I would NEVER mail a real key ANYWHERE !!! Good Luck, Kevin
I got a huf long key and also a red ended Porsche-logo'd key for my gas cap. I bought the lit key head separately from one of our 928 vendors.
Other useful tip - if the little metal badge falls off your lit key head and gets lost, you can buy a replacement metal badge for the key head - there's a specific part number for it
