When I got my car I only recieved one key with it. When I went to the dealer to get a second they said they couldnt help. More or less they couldnt be bothered. Does anyone know of any dealer in the NY metro area that could help. For obvious reasons I dont want to send my one and only key out to copy with the risk of it getting lost.

I'm sure Mark wont be the problem I would worry about the shipper.... I ordered a blank from 928intl in the spring but have not taken it anywhere yet to try to cut it

Well knock on wood to date I havent had any problems with USPS. Mark did however suggest taking some digital pictures of the key just in case it got lost. That way I could have the pics decoded and a new one made.

I'll chime in here and say that I got a duplicate key made for my '88 S4 at the local dealer just a few weeks ago. All I had to do was provide proof of ownership and the VIN, and then pay the 70 bucks or whatever it was. Maybe you just got a bum dealer, or maybe Princeton Porsche is a really top-shelf dealer, but either way, dealer worked for me.

Big negative on that, there are "maybe" half a dozen places in the world that cut keys for a 928 "well".

Keys from the dealer by VIN only work if the locks are original to the car.

Taking a set of good digital pictures of both sides of your key is great insurance.

Mechanical duplication of a worn key may not work so well.

From what Mark told me my key isnt the original one that came with my car. Being that its an '83 and the key has a light in it. When I went to the dealer he told me that keys arent available for a 928 let alone acar that old. Yet the guy in front of me on line got one for a 914. Quite honestly its probably a blesing in disguise if these arent the original locks it would have just been a waste of time and money.

I had mine done at the dealer, but they had asked for my VIN number prior to making the key and that I sign a couple forms.

For the record, a 914 has a normal, flat key like you can get cut anywhere, not the wacky multi-dimensional key that our 928 has.

I sent a dig photo to the guys in Australia, and the two keys they made work beautifully. As I recall, their process figures out how the key was originally made and thereby compensates for the wear present in the photograph. I actually put away the key that I got with the car and have been using one of the new ones because feels better in the locks.

Fast service, very reasonable price and worked perfectly .. I was impressed.
