The stock code label, the one that looks like a mailing label but has a barcode printed with a worn dot-matrix printer, is of some interest to me. I have the original still on the car and plenty of pictures but... The actual bar code is not any one that I can nail down. I can reproduce it in CAD but it will be tedious at best. Anyone have experience with these? Dan, it's the 15/16x2.5-ish label inboard of the VIN label in the doorjamb.

Hi DrBob - I have yet to tackle the door labels yet as I am still separate from my cars. However I have thought about the postal label bar code. CAD is over kill. I plan on using Photoshop to clean up (whiten the white and darken the black bars) on the photo I'll have of the label and will then print it out on an over sized Avery Label. I then use and Exacto knife to trim it to the correct size.

Any idea what is on these bar codes?

If you decode it it says that duplication is strictly verboten!

I'm only talking about the small white and black barcode label not the VIN label.

Find a font called 3 of 9 or code 39. It is a standard bar code and the one Porsche is standard too. Can be read by any bar code scanner.

Use it in word or excel and maybe even autocad.

I'll have to look for 3-of-9 and see if it matches. Next to the barcode is the VIN, so I've been ASSuming that the code matches the number. I think the smog guy scans it so it can't be too exotic. It does need to support alpha characters though.

It supports alpha numeric. I had to program a label that time date stamped and serial numbered a sticker. ( I work in the auto industry) Then printed it in bar code as well as man readable.

I downloaded it from the internet. If I get a chance I will see if I can find it.

Mine was taped over when it was painted and came apart upon removal of the tape...

You'd think the stamped metal numbers would be illegal to duplicate... stickers are just stickers, right?

The Shell factory-fill labels were used on all the cars, and should be readily available.

I found several 'freeware' code 39 fonts that I'll try on a sacrificial computer. Film in a week!

Code 3 of 9 is alpha numeric and directional with a leading and trailing asterisk

to make a valid code with the font of ABC123 use the font in a word processor etc. and type *ABC123*

the one I use for our software product can be downloaded from our server here
